Toyota Revs Up Lineup with New 302 Horsepower RAV4 Prime
New for Model Year 2021 and Available in Summer 2020
The Most Powerful and Quickest RAV4 Ever
The Most Fuel-Efficient RAV4 Ever
Projected 0-96 km/h in 5.8 Seconds and an estimated 2.6 Le/100 km fuel consumption
Available in SE and XSE Model Grades
Available Colour Head-Up Display, a RAV4 First
Premium Design Features
TORONTO, ON – November 20, 2019 – The fifth-generation Toyota RAV4, on the market for barely a year, is going more places than it has ever gone before. The arrival of the first-ever RAV4 TRD Off-Road model was announced earlier this year, and today, at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show, Toyota debuts a new premium, fun-to-drive RAV4 performance model with an estimated 302-horsepower, advanced all-wheel drive, sport-tuned suspension and exclusive design features.
It just happens to also be the first-ever RAV4 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). And so, in addition to an ability to do 0-96 km/h in a projected 5.8 seconds, which is the second quickest acceleration time in the Toyota lineup, it can drive an estimated 60 kilometres on battery alone on a single charge, which is the highest EV range of any PHEV SUV on the market. The RAV4 Prime also has a manufacturer-estimated 2.6 Le/100 km fuel consumption. Welcome to a new chapter of Toyota SUV performance.
The Toyota RAV4 Prime, a 2021 model that will arrive in summer 2020, breaks ground as the most powerful and quickest RAV4 ever while also being the most fuel-efficient.
The 2021 RAV4 Prime will be available in SE and XSE grades, both emphasizing athletic on-road performance and premium comfort and style. With its plug-in hybrid technology advancing, Toyota sees such vehicles as critical to an overall electrification strategy that will also include standard hybrids and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), along with fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) like the second-generation Mirai unveiled in October.
Think Faster
The Toyota RAV4 Prime builds on the RAV4 Hybrid, which is currently the most powerful and most fuel-efficient model in the line with sales up 97 per cent over the previous generation in Canada and currently the best-selling hybrid vehicle on the market. The RAV4 Prime amplifies both performance and efficiency, reflecting Toyota’s 20+ years of hybrid vehicle leadership.
With more powerful motor-generators, a newly developed high-capacity 17.8 kWh Lithium-Ion battery and a booster converter, the 2021 RAV4 Prime yields an 83 horsepower (hp) jump in total system output over the RAV4 Hybrid and has the most horsepower in its segment. The resulting boost in performance is striking: Toyota’s projected 0-96 km/h acceleration in 5.8 seconds is quicker than the RAV4 Hybrid (7.8 seconds) and in a league with luxury/performance SUVs that come nowhere near this Toyota’s remarkable fuel economy. And, notably, the RAV4 Prime uses regular-grade gasoline — just not much of it.
A comparison with an older RAV4 offers a vivid illustration of the march of technology. The 2006-2012 RAV4 offered an optional 269 horsepower, 3.5-litre gas V6 engine that reached 0-96 km/h in 6.3 seconds, which is a half-second slower than the RAV4 Prime. And, that model’s 9.6 L/100 km combined fuel consumption rating simply pales in comparison.
Sporty and Sportier
Toyota engineered the 2021 RAV4 Prime for the performance-oriented driver and is therefore offering it in the sporty SE and XSE grades. The SE grade is new for the fifth-generation RAV4 Prime, and the XSE is currently exclusive to the RAV4 Hybrid. The SE flaunts its sporty attitude with 18-inch painted and machined alloy wheels and an exclusive front grille design and front lower spoiler. Piano black exterior accents and a painted grille/diffuser complete the premium look.
The SE’s equipment is quite comprehensive, with standard heated front seats, 8-way power driver’s seat with lumbar adjustment, 7-inch Multi-Information Display, Blind Spot Monitor, Audio with 8-inch touch-screen and a leather steering wheel and shift knob with red stitching.
As on the current RAV4 Hybrid XSE, the Prime version of this grade stands apart with a two-tone exterior paint scheme pairing a black roof with select colours, including the striking new-to-RAV4 Supersonic Red. Exclusive 19-inch alloy wheels, the largest ever offered on a hybrid RAV4, have a unique two-tone design. Vertical LED accent lights give the XSE a distinct look, while the optional Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) with headlamp auto-leveling partially aims the beams into turns as the driver steers.
Inside, XSE steps up the sport, luxury and tech with unique SofTex synthetic leather seat surfaces, wireless smartphone charging, ambient lighting, auto-dimming rearview mirror with integrated garage door opener and the largest multimedia screen in any RAV4 ever. The available Weather & Moonroof Package on the XSE package or higher lets in the sun, moon and stars while keeping the cold at bay with a heated steering wheel, heated rear outboard seats, and windshield wiper de-icer, while rain-sensing windshield wipers add to convenience.
An available Premium Package pushes the RAV4 Prime XSE further with the RAV4’s first-ever paddle shifters, perforated and ventilated SofTex front seats, RAV4’s first head-up display, heated rear SofTex outboard seats, panoramic moonroof, digital rear-view mirror, memory driver’s seat, 4-way power passenger seat, 5-door SmartKey system, kick-type power rear liftgate, Bird’s Eye View Monitor and yes, more.
How Does It Do That?
Toyota hybrids have for years demonstrated high performance with low fuel consumption, and now the 2021 RAV4 Prime makes one of the strongest cases yet. The RAV4 Prime uses a differently tuned version of the RAV4 Hybrid’s 2.5-litre four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle gas engine. It produces the same 176 horsepower as in the hybrid, but with 168 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 2,800 rpm vs. the RAV4 Hybrid’s 163 lb.-ft. at 3,600-5,200 rpm.
That makes a useful difference in lower-speed performance, while using more powerful electric motor-generators really juice the RAV4 Prime’s responses. As in the RAV4 Hybrid, the gas engine and a motor generator work together to deliver dynamic performance, while both motor generators charge the larger Prime battery.
Electrified Traction
The RAV4 Prime employs the same version of Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive (AWD) as the RAV4 Hybrid. In both models, a separate rear-mounted electric motor powers the rear wheels when needed, including proactively on acceleration startup and also in reduced-traction conditions.
The AWD system also reduces understeer during cornering for enhanced steering stability. Off-pavement, AWD enhances hill-climbing performance. A driver-selectable Trail mode makes it possible to get unstuck by braking a spinning wheel and sending torque to the grounding wheel.
With available paddle shifters, the driver can “downshift” to increase the regenerative braking in steps, which fosters greater control when driving in hilly areas, for example.
All Toyota RAV4 models come equipped with standard Toyota Safety Sense (TSS 2.0), which groups a long roster of active-safety technologies and capabilities:
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD)
Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA)
Automatic High Beam (AHB)
Lane Tracing Assist (LTA)
The XSE Premium Package adds Rear Cross Traffic Braking (RCTB) and Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automated Braking (PA w/AB).
Starting with the 2020 model year, every Toyota Hybrid Battery Warranty is being increased from 8 years or 160,000 kilometres to 10 years from original date of first use, or 240,000 kilometres, whichever comes first.
Get A Grip: Toyota Introduces New Camry and Avalon All-Wheel Drive Sedans
Developed and Assembled Exclusively for North American Toyota drivers
Available as Stand-Alone Option on Most Model Grades
Exemplary Fuel Efficiency with a 202-horsepower Engine
Shared TNGA Technology from Toyota RAV4
TORONTO, ON – November 13, 2019 – With winter about to spread its icy grip to much of Canada and the United States, Toyota is introducing the new all-wheel drive Camry and Avalon models to help drivers get a better grip on the road. It’s the first AWD Camry since 1991, and the first-ever Avalon with AWD. The Toyota-developed Dynamic Torque Control AWD system will be available as a standalone option for the Camry LE, XLE, SE and XSE grades and on Avalon Limited.
In recent years, market demand for AWD passenger vehicles has increased, due to the rising popularity of SUVs and crossovers. Midsize sedan customers outside the luxury category, have had relatively few AWD choices. Now, Toyota gives them two more with Camry and Toyota’s flagship sedan, Avalon.
Notably, the Camry AWD and Avalon AWD are North America-only models, assembled exclusively at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky.
For most Camry AWD models, a high-efficiency 202-horsepower 2.5-litre DOHC four-cylinder engine (205 horsepower with dual exhaust on Camry XSE AWD and Avalon AWD grades) teams with an 8-speed Direct-Shift automatic transmission. The new AWD system balances added traction with exemplary fuel efficiency.
The Camry and Avalon AWD models emphasize Toyota’s commitment to the sedan category with more choices and benefits to its drivers.
Toyota previously offered an AWD Camry in 1988-1991, called the AllTrac. The company appreciates the loyalty, patience and perseverance of all those customers and dealers who sent letters, emails, Facebook comments and texts asking for a modern AWD version of the Camry.
Smarter All-Wheel Drive
To many car buyers, “all-wheel drive” may mean one thing, but there are many different AWD technologies on the market. Toyota found an ideal type of AWD for Camry and Avalon in its new-generation RAV4 compact SUV introduced for 2019. The Dynamic Torque Control AWD system provides effective traction for inclement and slippery weather while minimizing AWD’s typical drag on fuel economy. Admittedly, the system name is a mouthful; Camry and Avalon models equipped with it will carry a simple “AWD” badge on their trunk lids.
The Camry and Avalon AWD system can direct up to 50 per cent of engine torque to the rear wheels, in response to acceleration from a start or slippage at the front wheels.
Notably, when AWD isn’t needed, such as on long highway stretches, the electromagnetic controlled coupling on the front of the rear drive axle can disengage the propeller shaft from the differential to prioritize fuel efficiency. The AWD is designed to re-engage in an instant when needed. AWD operation is transparent to the driver and passengers. On that note, the Camry and Avalon AWD models match their FWD counterparts in critical passenger space, trunk room, ride comfort, cabin quietness and vehicle agility.
A North American Effort
Neither the new-generation Camry nor Avalon was originally planned to have an AWD version, so the engineering team at Toyota Motor North America Research and Development in Saline, Michigan, developed them to meet the market demand for AWD sedans. The flexibility and components of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), and specifically the Camry and Avalon’s TNGA platform, allowed the team to develop the AWD versions in-house with improved efficiency.
Far more than a vehicle platform, TNGA brings together new approaches to engineering, design, production and materials. Its flexibility to develop different models from the same tools had already been proven. The North America-only Camry and Avalon AWD show that TNGA can be used by individual Toyota regions to tailor vehicles to that market’s local needs.
Since the RAV4 is also based on the TNGA platform, the opportunity to share components and basic engineering was built in. The team combined the upper body structure of the Camry and Avalon with the engine, transmission, transfer case and rear differential from the RAV4. The RAV4’s version of the multi-link rear suspension was adapted with some modifications and tuning to suit the sedans. Both the Camry and Avalon AWD use a modified version of the propeller shaft from the all-new Highlander SUV.
Adapting the AWD drivetrain to the Camry and Avalon required floor structure modifications, plus the use of an electronic parking brake and a saddle-style fuel tank with an optimized capacity for AWD models rather than the flat-style tank in the FWD models. Inside the car has the same rear seat hip point height as the Camry hybrid. Despite the addition of a rear differential, the trunk floor height remains the same as in the FWD versions.
The transformation to AWD adds just 165 lbs. over the Camry FWD while the Avalon AWD weight is similar to that of its FWD V6 siblings.
Customers can expect the Camry and Avalon AWD to provide similar ride and handling characteristics as the FWD models, plus of course the added traction capability. The suspension tuning, wheels, and tires differentiating the Camry and Avalon model grades carry over to the new AWD models. That means, for example, the Camry XSE grade features the same sport-tuned suspension and 19-inch wheels in FWD and AWD versions.
The Camry AWD will be model year 2020 and arrive at dealerships in early spring. The 2020 Camry SE Upgrade AWD, XLE AWD and XSE AWD will come standard with a heated steering wheel. All other standard and optional features carry over from the FWD versions of the LE, XLE, SE and XSE model grades, including the latest Connected Services by Toyota multimedia systems with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa compatibility.
Toyota Safety Sense-P
All 2020 Camry and Avalon models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense-P (TSS-P) a suite of cutting-edge active safety systems that includes:
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD)
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA)
Automatic High Beams (AHB).
Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) are available on Camry and standard on Avalon. Intelligent Clearance Sonar (ICS) with Rear Cross Traffic Braking (RCTB) also are available on both models.
Star Safety
All 2020 Camry and Avalon models have 10 standard airbags and Toyota’s Star Safety System, which includes Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, Anti-lock Braking System, and Smart Stop Technology. All come equipped with a standard backup camera.

TORONTO, ON – APRIL 17, 2019 – Just as the first RAV4 launched the compact crossover SUV segment 22 years ago, the original Highlander redefined the midsize family SUV when it arrived in 2001. At a time when most intermediate SUVs were truck-based, the Highlander’s unibody structure with four-wheel independent suspension quickly became the template for a new segment of more comfortable and family-friendly SUV’s. After adding a third row, the Highlander not only grew in size, but is also now the best-selling retail model in the segment since 2017 in Canada. Now, the fourth-generation of this benchmark SUV brings a new level of bold, distinctive design to a foundation built on safety, comfort, quality, durability and reliability set by predecessors. The 2020 Highlander amplifies all qualities while taking on a dramatic new design direction that combines a powerful SUV presence with sophisticated detailing. The 2020 Highlander’s new sophisticated look, covers a new vehicle platform called Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA-K). This robust new foundation, shared with other Toyota models, enables even greater capability, comfort and safety than before. The fourth-generation Highlander offers the choice between a powerful V6 or new-generation hybrid powertrain, with the gas version offering a manufacturer-estimated 10.7 L/100 km combined fuel consumption and the Hybrid offering a manufacturer-estimated 6.9 L/100km combined fuel consumption. Whether they’re young families or empty nesters exploring a new chapter in life, safety remains the top priority for Highlander customers. Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 comes standard in all models in the 2020 Highlander. This comprehensive active safety system includes:
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD)
Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA)
Automatic High Beam (AHB)
(New) Lane Tracing Assist (LTA)
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection offers automatic braking capability under certain circumstances should the driver not react in time in a system-detected emergency situation. Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Parking Support Braking and Intelligent Clearance Sonar (ICS) are available depending on the model grade. The 2020 Highlander delivers renowned Toyota value in a choice of five grades, starting with a new L grade, then layering amenities and technology in LE, XLE, Limited and the top-of line Platinum. (The Hybrid is offered on all but the L grade.) The 2020 Highlander offers cutting-edge entertainment and connectivity for all ages through its intuitive and versatile multimedia system, including a new 12.3-inch touchscreen display on the Platinum grade and 8-inch on the other models. The available new JBL Premium Sound System delivers a whopping 1,200 watts of power to turn any music source into a mobile concert. The intermediate SUV segment has become fiercely competitive, and the 2020 Toyota Highlander is ready to take on all. The Strong, Athletic Type A sculpted new shape with chiseled lines gives the 2020 Highlander a more powerful stance, yet with a modern, sophisticated attitude. The 2020 Highlander remains a family-friendly SUV, now with capability for bigger family adventures. Setting off the new design, the L, LE and XLE grades feature a black front grille with silver trim, while the Limited and Platinum grades are distinguished by a black grille with chrome trim and chrome-plated lower rear fascia, premium projector headlamps and the Highlander’s first-ever 20-inch alloy wheels. The Platinum stands apart with silver painted front bumper and rear fascia and a unique 20-inch wheel. Accentuating the 2020 Highlander’s bold lines, the exterior colour palette carries over three colours from 2019 (Blizzard Pearl (optional), Celestial Silver Metallic and Midnight Black Metallic) while adding five new ones: Magnetic Grey Metallic, Moon Dust (a striking blue premium paint), Ruby Flare Pearl (a daring red premium paint), Blueprint and Opulent Amber (a deep, luxurious brown). While Highlander’s new design will turn heads everywhere it goes, it’s also highly functional. Greater aerodynamic efficiency reduces wind noise while enhancing vehicle stability, and even the taillights and side mirror designs lend a hand. The fourth-generation Highlander is 60mm longer than before, all in the cargo area to add even greater cargo volume than before. The second row can be slid an extra 30 mm further up to increase distance between the second and third rows. The TNGA-K platform, which makes extensive use of high-strength steel, gives the Highlander a stiffer unibody structure than the previous model. Its inherent strength allows tuning for the front strut and rear multi-link suspension that enhances agility and a smaller turning circle while also providing a smoother and quieter ride than before. The presence of takumi is evident whenever the driver experiences the Highlander’s premium touch and feel in everyday driving. Throughout vehicle development, these highly trained master craftsmen focused on the finest technical details to ensure a higher level of operating smoothness in all driving conditions – especially at everyday speeds. Take It All with You Looking sporty does not come at the expense of practicality in the 2020 Highlander. A second-row bench for seating for eight is standard, while a Captain’s Chair second row with seating for seven is optional on higher grades. Either way, the large rear doors provide easy access, while versatile seat folding features make it easy to enter the third row. And, passengers in the third row stay comfortable thanks to available three-zone climate control that ensures ample flow of warmed or cooled air. With all seat rows in use, Highlander offers 456 L (16.1 cu. ft.) of carrying space behind the third row. Folding the 60/40 split fold-flat third-row seatbacks opens the space to 1150 L (40.6 cu. ft.), and then folding the second row raises that to 2076 L (73.3 cu. ft.). The versatile cargo area makes the most of its additional length with side surfaces and pockets shaped for maximum space usage. Power, Performance and Panache … with Efficiency Power and efficiency are a whole lot sexier when wrapped in Highlander’s striking design. The 2020 Highlander offers a choice between two advanced powertrains, a gas V6 or a new version of the Toyota Hybrid System. The 295-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 is the epitome of smoothness. Its Toyota-innovated D-4S Injection system combines direct fuel injection with port fuel injectors to optimize efficiency, power and emissions in all conditions. Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (Dual VVT-i) likewise ensures ideal response and efficiency at all engine speeds. That translates into 295 horsepower and 263 lb.-ft. of torque, which further translates into exemplary everyday performance and generous towing capability. The Direct Shift 8-speed automatic transmission maximizes Highlander’s acceleration and highway merging capability while operating seamlessly and transparently. On V6 models, the towing package enables a 5,000-pound towing capacity. The package includes a heavy-duty radiator with engine oil cooler and improved fan performance. Trailer Sway Control (TSC) uses the Vehicle Stability Control to help control unwanted trailer movement. Why use fuel when you don’t need to? The Highlander’s standard Stop and Start Engine System allows the engine to shut off when the vehicle comes to a complete stop, and then instantly restarts when the driver’s foot lifts from the brake pedal. This technology reduces fuel consumption and cuts emissions. Hybrid Aims Even Higher Toyota made “hybrid” synonymous with high fuel efficiency more than 20 years ago. Later, Toyota introduced the first hybrid SUV in its class, the 2006 Highlander. Leave it to Toyota to again raise the bar for hybrid SUV functionality by making the 2020 model the most fuel-efficient Highlander Hybrid ever. The new-generation Toyota Hybrid System in the 2020 Highlander Hybrid combines a high-efficiency 2.5-litre DOHC four-cylinder engine with two electric motors in a system that’s more compact, and more efficient than before. The gas engine employs Variable Valve Timing-intelligent system by Electric motor (VVT-iE) on the intake camshaft, and VVT-i on the exhaust camshaft. A variable cooling system (electric water pump, electric thermostat) and a fully variable oil pump further improve engine efficiency. The bottom line is an eye opener for the efficiency-minded: 240 total system horsepower and an estimated 6.9 L/100 km combined fuel consumption. The latter is a 17-percent improvement over the previous-generation Highlander Hybrid’s 8.3 L/100km combined fuel consumption. Yet, Highlander Hybrid still delivers the everyday acceleration, power and responsiveness that family buyers expect. The transaxle mounts the electric motors (MG1 and MG2) coaxially rather than in-line, and the resulting smaller and lighter package reduces frictional losses. The gas engine and MG2 work in concert to deliver dynamic performance, while both MG1 and MG2 charge the hybrid battery. To reduce the transaxle’s size and weight, the reduction gear is now a parallel shaft gear, rather than a planetary, and a new multi-function gear integrates the power-split planetary ring gear, parking gear, and counter-drive gear. New computer integration and a smaller, lighter power stack installed directly above the transaxle reduce energy transmission losses. The battery pack is small enough to be installed under the rear seats, so it does not take up any cargo or passenger space. Seamless Everyday Performance The Highlander Hybrid delivers its exemplary fuel economy and performance without calling attention to its high-tech powertrain operation. Quite the contrary, like all Toyota Hybrid vehicles, it simply goes about its business in a transparent way. For example, the new system optimizes the level of electric motor assistance and gas engine speed without the engine running at high revs. Engine speed is synchronized with vehicle speed, yielding effortless and quiet acceleration. As on many modern vehicles, the Highlander Hybrid offers selectable NORMAL, ECO and SPORT driving modes that let the driver choose the vehicle’s performance personality. The bonus is the EV mode, which allows electric-only driving at low speeds for short distances. SPORT mode unlocks boost from the hybrid system for improved acceleration response. ECO mode gets maximum efficiency from the fuel and battery, while NORMAL mode is ideal for everyday driving. Special, easy-to-use hybrid tech adds an element of control and fun. Using a sequential shifting feature, the driver can “downshift” to increase the regenerative braking in steps, which fosters greater control when driving in hilly areas, for example. The 2020 Highlander Hybrid can also coach the driver to drive as economically as possible. For example, an accelerator guide function suggests an acceleration level to the driver according to the driving conditions, and a scoring function adds a measure of fun to eco driving. All-Wheel Drive Gets Smarter The 2020 Highlander gets a grip on any road with a choice of front-wheel drive or three different available all-wheel drive systems — two for the V6 models and a unique AWD system for the Highlander Hybrid. For the Highlander Gas LE and XLE models, the standard AWD system can send up to 50 percent of available torque to the rear wheels to counter wheel slip when necessary. Sounding like something from a high-end sports car, Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with Drive Mode Select and Driveline Disconnect is available for the Highlander Limited and Platinum for even greater agility and capability. In addition to governing torque distribution between the front and rear wheels, this advanced system uses special couplings to actively manage torque distribution between the left and right rear wheels. Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD doesn’t need wheel slippage before springing into action. Rather, a sophisticated AWD Integrated Management (AIM) manages Electric Power Steering (EPS), throttle control, transmission shift control and drive torque distribution to continually optimize handling. Using the Multi-Terrain Select control dial on the console, the driver can maximize traction when driving through inclement weather or road conditions. Mud & Sand mode works well for beach driving, while Rock & Dirt mode optimizes AWD traction for trails. The driver can monitor, in real time, torque allocation and slip control on the Multi-Information Display (MID). In addition, Highlander models include the following features for optimal on-road and off-road performance and safety:
Hill Start Assist Control (HAC)
Trailer Sway Control (TSC)
Downhill Assist Control (DAC)
All-wheel drive is a great traction partner, but it’s not needed all the time, such as during steady highway cruising. In such situations, Rear Driveline Disconnect automatically disengages drive to the rear wheels and stops the propeller shaft’s rotation. As one might guess, that reduces the energy needed to propel the vehicle and therefore reduces fuel consumption. When AWD is needed, the system instantly re-engages, without the driver even noticing. Hybrid AWD As with the AWD system in the previous Highlander Hybrid, the 2020 model’s standard AWD employs a separate rear-mounted electric motor to power the rear wheels when needed. Like the hybrid powertrain itself, the AWD works seamlessly and transparently. The rear electric motor operates independently, with no mechanical connection between the transmission and the rear wheels. Preemptively distributing more driving force to the rear wheels, such as when accelerating, helps suppress front wheel slip during off-the-line starts. The system also enhances cornering agility by helping to reduce understeer. And, when venturing onto a trail, the increased rear-wheel torque helps move the Highlander Hybrid confidently over rough or slippery surfaces. A New Level of Comfort From the L grade to the top-of-line Platinum, the 2020 Highlander offers its plushest accommodations ever. Designers took inspiration from luxury crafted interiors to create a more premium ambience. Details include softer padded surfaces and a more tailored look with stitching that continues from the door trim to the instrument panel. The dash integrates the multimedia and HVAC controls in an elegant and functional way. The 2020 Highlander cabin offers improved functionality throughout, from a centre console that offers available Qi wireless charging to plenty of storage spaces and USB charging ports. On Limited and Platinum grades, new ambient LED lighting sets a relaxing mood. Inset steering wheel controls are a modern luxury touch on all grades. Highlanders have long been renowned for a quiet ride, and with the high-strength TNGA platform, Toyota pushes the bar even higher. Sound-damping and soundproofing materials have been optimized throughout the vehicle, with the takumi approach focusing particularly on minimizing noise in the frequencies that interfere with conversation. The seating colour palette enhances the sense of luxury permeating the 2020 Highlander. The L and LE grades offer comfortable woven cloth in Black; the XLE offers embossed Softex® artificial leather-trim in Harvest Beige or Black, while the Limited offers those colours as well as Graphite Grey in perforated leather-trim. The top-of-line Platinum grade, the most luxurious Highlander ever offered, exclusively features embossed, perforated leather-trim in those three colours plus a luxuriously delicious brown called Glazed Caramel. Multitalented Multimedia However passengers listen to music and connect with their worlds, the 2020 Highlander is ready with the latest multimedia systems. All grades come standard with Apple Car Play® and Android Auto. All Highlander models come equipped with Toyota Safety Connect with a one-year trial subscription. XLE and above grades offer Service and Remote Connectivity. A move up to Platinum grade offers the 12.3-inch screen. The JBL® Premium Audio System is standard for Limited and Platinum grades and rocks music of all genres with 1,200 watts of power playing through 11 speakers in nine locations. Clari-Fi® technology breathes new life into compressed digital music formats, with the result like a mobile concert. The system will not, however, settle arguments over which music to play. Safety at Its Core The new TNGA-K platform forms the foundation for exemplary collision protection in the 2020 Toyota Highlander, while a suite of standard driver-assist technologies is designed to help prevent collisions, or to mitigate their impacts. The 2020 Highlander is equipped with the second-generation of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS 2.0). Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) are standard on all grades. Rear Cross Traffic Braking (RCTB) is available with clearance sonar on Limited and above. The standard backup camera features projected path. A Bird’s Eye View Camera with Perimeter Scan, available on Limited and standard on Platinum, provides a live rotating 360-degree view around the vehicle. The 2020 Highlander is equipped with eight airbags, including side curtain airbags for all three rows. Toyota’s Star Safety System includes Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Smart Stop Technology (SST).

TORONTO, ON – JANUARY 14, 2019 – In July 2018, in view of tens of thousands of spectators at England’s world-renowned Goodwood Festival of Speed, a low, long-hood sports car wearing full-body camouflage with mysterious “A90” markings blasted up the narrow, curvy hill-climb circuit. For Toyota enthusiasts, “A90” was the giveaway: the A40, A60, A70 and A80 that came before were Supras. The Toyota Supra was coming back!
In January 2019, the fifth-generation GR Supra, the first global Toyota GAZOO Racing model, makes its undisguised world debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, ending years of anticipation and speculation among sports car enthusiasts around the world. Behind the new Supra is a 50+ year lineage of unique Toyota sports and GT cars. Ahead of it awaits the world’s great driving roads, some of which were used to develop this all-new expression of Toyota pure sports car performance.
The 2020 Supra goes on sale in summer of 2019. Driving enthusiasts can look forward to an exhilarating blend of power, precision and agility thanks to a rear-wheel drive design that honours Toyota sports car heritage with its low centre of gravity and optimal weight balance. There is a strong connection to Toyota’s 1967 2000 GT and 1993-2002 Supra in both design and mechanical configuration.
Yet, the 2020 Supra is a fully forward-looking sports car, brimming with a cutting-edge powertrain, chassis and multimedia technology. Like the pinnacle of the previous Supra series, the 2020 model will be powered by a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine. The new Supra’s 3.0-litre twin-scroll turbo six will produce 335 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque and will be teamed with a quick-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Toyota projects 0-96 km/h acceleration in 4.1 seconds.
By defining specific performance and handling targets early in development, Toyota GAZOO Racing in Japan, with much input from Toyota Motor North America and Toyota Motor Europe, imbued the Supra with its own driving characteristics. While posting the kind of performance numbers that excite enthusiasts, the 2020 Supra will reward drivers of all skill levels with a thrilling sports car feel, even in everyday driving.
Toyota President and Master Driver Akio Toyoda tested the Supra on the Nürburgring and other racing venues to give his personal feedback as a Master Driver to ensure this new model would exceed the expectations of Supra fans across the globe.
Supra devotees have waited a long time for the next-generation model. They’ll find the 2020 Supra worth the wait. Shaped by Emotion … and Racing
The 2020 Supra embodies its rich lineage at first glance, with a design that shows a particular kinship with the fourth-generation Supra built from 1993-2002, as well as the landmark 1967 Toyota 2000 GT. The resemblance is more than skin deep: the new-generation Supra also shares with those notable models the common traits of a short wheelbase, sophisticated chassis and high-performance inline-six-cylinder engine.
Toyota offered a glimpse of the new Supra’s design theme in 2014 with the dramatic FT-1 concept car that emerged from Toyota’s Calty design centre in California. Supra’s striking exterior design was inspired by the FT-1’s expressive form.
Optimization of the FT-1 design onto the efficient, high-performance packaging of Supra was achieved by condensing the forms, reducing unnecessary elements and further enhancing the dynamic and powerful character. It focuses on core Supra attributes, such as its inline six-cylinder engine and rear drive layout, while enhancing other features, such as stretching the hood to highlight the engine, creating a taut, but spacious two-seat cabin that helps accentuate an ultra-wide stance. The result is a look unique to Supra internally referred to as “Condensed Extreme.” Functional by Design
The Supra design delivers a 50:50 weight balance while optimizing front-to-rear aerodynamic balance. Toyota’s sports car heritage is evident throughout. The double-bubble roof design, for example, recalls the Toyota 2000 GT and it reduces drag by shaving the roof centre to reduce the projected frontal area without sacrificing occupant headroom.
The front fascia was inspired by the fourth-generation Supra yet is even more expressive, with a prominent central grille section flanked by large air intakes. In the rear, the prominent, arching rear integrated spoiler, which helps to suppress aerodynamic lift, pays homage to the tall rear wing that was available on the fourth-gen Supra Turbo. The trapezoidal rear bumper shape conveys a dynamic sense of movement toward the tires.
The six-lens LED headlights integrate both daytime running lamps and turn signal functions to create a distinctive lighting signature for the new Supra. The rear combination lamps feature a simple structure with the turn, tail and stop functions integrated into the distinctive main ring shape. The backup lamps are LEDs located in the centre of the lower bumper Details Matter
Expressive colours accentuate the emotional connection drivers feel with a high-performance sports car, which is why the 2020 Supra’s paint palette will include bold red, yellow and blue shades. The available matte gray adds a sense of drama to the Supra’s tautly curved surfaces by combining a matte finish and a hint of blue to create a metal-like texture.
Other available colours include silver, white, black and dark gray.
Fun fact: In the new version of the famous Supra logotype, the “S” was inspired by a racetrack s-bend. Cockpit Concept: Wrapping the Driver
The 2020 Supra cockpit deftly blends traditional GT elements with ultra-modern functionality. The low, narrow-section dash gives the driver expansive forward visibility, ideal for precisely placing the car in corners.
A high-definition colour display forms the instrument panel, projecting a large-diameter, three-dimensional meter dial that seems to float over it. The single-metre design consolidates information necessary for performance driving, such as the tachometer and shift-timing indicator, enabling the driver to easily focus on critical control information through the small-diameter steering wheel.
The display’s easy-to-read layout puts multimedia information, including audio and navigation, on the right side. A full-colour Head-Up Display projects vital driving and navigation information ahead of the driver.
Toyota designers took a fresh approach to designing the centre console, giving it an asymmetrical shape that tightly envelops the driver, with a padded pillar that serves as a right leg bolster. The passenger’s side of the console, meanwhile, is open for a roomy feel, yet also features kneepads for bolstering in corners.
The centre console tightly groups controls for sports driving. The climate control panel protrudes from the centre dash, easing operation without averting eyes from the road. Racing-Inspired Seats
Toyota designed the 2020 Supra to be both an everyday sports car and an occasional track car. To that end, its sport seats, featuring integrated head restraints, were inspired by racing. The heated, leather seats use a narrow main section combined with the shoulder bolsters to firmly hold the driver and passenger.
Supra’s smartly trimmed luggage area, accessed via a lightweight composite hatch, offers capacity for two people to pack for a weekend getaway. The compartment is shaped to accommodate long items, such as a track day toolkit. The 2020 Supra Performance Story
The 2020 Supra will feature a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six that will produce 335 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. The torque comes on strong from very low engine speeds, thanks to a combination of a twin-scroll turbocharger, direct fuel injection, and continuously variable timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. Engine response is further enhanced thanks to the inline six’s variable intake valve lift system that adjusts intake valve timing and duration.
The 8-speed automatic transmission delivers quick up- and down-shifts and features paddle shifters for manual control when desired. Short ratios for the lower gears and a Launch Control function enable powerful acceleration with maximum traction. Toyota estimates 0-96 km/h acceleration in 4.1 seconds. Top track speed will be electronically limited to 250 km/h.
The 2020 Supra will offer two driving modes, Normal and Sport. Sport Mode provides track-driving capability by reducing intervention of the traction and stability control functions as well as sharpening throttle response, increasing steering weight, improving transmission shift crispness, more aggressive active differential tuning and amplifying exhaust sound.
For performance driving enthusiasts, the Supra will have an active differential that uses an electric motor and multi-plate clutches to control lateral torque. The active differential precisely controls torque distribution between the rear wheels, with stepless variable locking from 0-100 per cent. The differential can control torque distribution between the rear wheels when cornering under both acceleration and braking, enabling greater momentum through a corner. The active differential is also effective at ensuring neutral handling by reducing both understeer and oversteer. Chassis: Lessons from the Track
Toyota GAZOO Racing had a specific vision when developing Supra. High structural rigidity, a low centre of gravity and 50:50 weight distribution was paramount to Toyota’s goal of achieving neutral cornering balance. For example, Toyota identified nine areas of the vehicle’s rear structure to be reinforced to increase rigidity.
Toyota also specified spring and shock absorber tuning for the new double-joint spring strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension. Likewise, Toyota set specific parameters for Supra’s stability control system performance.
The front suspension subframe and control arm mounting points are extremely rigid to yield precise cornering characteristics. Aluminum control arms reduce unsprung weight, resulting in superior agility and efficiency. High-performance wheel hubs feature increased stiffness and optimized kinematics. For precise handling, Supra features a variable assist and variable ratio sport-tuned electric power steering.
The multi-link rear suspension with a five-arm construction consists of lightweight aluminum to reduce weight while steel is employed in key areas for added strength and durability. The rigid rear subframe, and the bracing that connects it to the body structure, helps ensure extremely precise wheel control. Supra will come standard with 19-inch forged alloy wheels. The rear wheels and tires are wider than on the front (rear tires: 275/35R19; front tires: 255/35R19) to enhance grip, and performance Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires are fitted. Brakes are large at all four corners, highlighted by 13.7-inch front rotors held by 4-piston Brembo calipers.
Standard on Supra is Adaptive Variable Suspension. This system instantly adjusts damping force in response to driver input and road conditions. Two settings for the suspension are available – Normal and Sport.
Road and track development took place in France, Austria, Italy (including many winding roads through the Alps), Germany (including the Nürburgring track), Sweden (ice and snow road testing), the U.K., Japan, Australia, and the U.S. A global citizen, the new Supra will be assembled in Graz, Austria. GT Comfort, Maximum Multimedia
Like its 1990s predecessor, the 2020 Toyota Supra will be equipped as a premium GT, with a deft balance of function and premium comfort and convenience features. Keyless Smart Entry, dual automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, rear camera, rain sensor windshield wipers, garage door opener, power folding mirrors, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel will be standard.
Standard active safety features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beam and road sign assist. Additional active safety and convenience features are adaptive full speed cruise control, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert and rear end collision warning.
The new-generation Supra will of course deliver a state-of-the-art multimedia and connectivity experience. It will get an 8.8-inch touchscreen display with navigation, rotary touch controller, Supra Connect telematics services, wireless Apple CarPlay, a premium 12-speaker JBL audio system, and wireless phone charging. 50+ Years of Toyota Sports Car Heritage
The 2020 Toyota Supra traces a 50+ year lineage to Toyota’s first sports car, the 1965 Sports 800. This sleek but tiny (3.5 m. long) coupe offered a little over 40 horsepower from an air-cooled, two-cylinder boxer engine. The Sports 800 weighed just 580 kg and could reach 160 km/h in racing trim. It was successful in long distance races where reliability and fuel economy worked to its advantage. Here’s one for car trivia buffs: The Sports 800 was the first production sports car to have a lift-out aluminum roof panel. 2000 GT
In 1967, Toyota stunned the sports car establishment with the limited-production, hand-built 2000 GT. This six-cylinder, two-seat coupe smashed three world records and set 13 new international records for speed and endurance. Just 351 of the 2000 GTs were made, about 60 of those left-hand-drive for export to the U.S.
Nevertheless, many Americans saw the 2000 GT when a specially built roadster version was the automotive star in that year’s James Bond film, “You Only Live Twice.” Today, 2000 GTs can approach $1 million in collector-car auctions. Age of the Supra
In 1978, Toyota introduced the first Supra (A40) as a premium, six-cylinder version of the popular Celica sports coupe. Four years later, Toyota began to separate the Supra from the Celica, with the second generation (A60) featuring a completely different front-end design and a striking Performance model with wider wheels and fender flares.
With the debut of the third-generation model for 1986 (A70), the Supra became its own distinct car. The following year, the Mk. III, as Supra aficionados call it, debuted a Turbo upgrade model with 230 horsepower.
Then came the icon: the fourth-generation Supra (A80, or “Mk. IV” to Supra buffs) arrived in 1993 and upended the global sports car / GT hierarchy. The Supra Turbo used twin sequential turbochargers to extract 320 horsepower from its 3.0-litre inline six. This utterly unique sports GT could accelerate from zero-to-96 km/h in under five seconds, trouncing direct competitors, as well as some European models costing two-to-three times as much.
The Mk. IV Supra left the North American market after 1998 but was produced until 2002. It went on to become famous for new generations in video games and in the “Fast and Furious” film series, stoking an intensely loyal following that helped spur Toyota to develop the all-new fifth-generation Supra. Toyota GAZOO Racing
The 2020 GR Supra is the first global model developed by Toyota GAZOO Racing, the international umbrella for Toyota’s global motorsport program. In just the past year GR won the Le Mans 24 Hours race and the FIA World Rally Champions. Its work is based on three pillars: developing people through taking part in motorsport; creating fans through the excitement of motorsport and producing fun-to-drive cars; and making ever-better cars by applying the knowledge gained from motorsport competition.
This ethos has been fully embraced by both Kiichiro Toyoda, founder of Toyota, and Akio Toyoda, Toyota Motor Corporation president, for its goal of “making ever-better cars”. Starting with this Supra, Toyota GAZOO Racing will transfer technical learnings from the race track or rally stage to the development of not just new generations of Toyota’s sports-focused GR models, but also to its wider range of vehicles, driven by tens of millions of people around the world.
With the 2020 Supra, Toyota is seeking to ignite automotive enthusiasts with fond memories of the Supra, as well as spark a new wave of sports car fans around the world.

Electrifying Design Meets Electrified Power in the All-New 2020 Corolla Hybrid
TORONTO, ON – November 28, 2018 – With its bumper-to-bumper, wheels-to-roof transformation, the 2020 Toyota Corolla was already big news in sedans for 2019. And now comes the ultimate “But wait, there’s more!” bonus: a new hybrid model that will have an anticipated combined fuel consumption of less than 5.0L / 100 km. That makes the 2020 Corolla Hybrid the most fuel-efficient model to ever wear the model name that debuted more than a half-century ago.
The design isn’t the only thing electrifying about the Corolla Hybrid. This high-efficiency model adapts the latest Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive from the new-generation Prius, already proven as a fuel economy winner. Only Toyota offers such a distinct choice of hybrids in this vehicle segment, thus catering to customers who have different tastes in design but the same desire for maximum fuel efficiency.
The 2020 Corolla Hybrid, like its gas-powered siblings, delivers a highly-satisfying driving experience, along with the brand’s latest advances in comfort and multimedia technology. As on the 2020 Corolla gas models, the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite of active safety systems comes standard.
The 2020 Corolla Hybrid is yet more evidence of Toyota’s indisputable global hybrid leadership, which began more than 20 years ago. Fit for a Hybrid
The hybrid powertrain and battery were a natural fit for the new Corolla because of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform. There’s no compromise in cabin roominess, for example, when choosing the Corolla Hybrid versus a gas model.
The new hybrid system combines a 1.8-litre four-cylinder gasoline engine with two motor/generators through an electronically controlled planetary-type continuously variable transmission (CVT) transaxle. Combined system output of 121 horsepower yields decidedly responsive performance.
The nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery pack employs a newly developed technology called Hyper-Prime Nickel™ to boost battery performance in a smaller and lighter package. The battery’s smaller size and flatter shape allow it to be packaged under the rear seat, rather than taking up trunk space, and also allowing a 60/40 split folding rear seatback to expand cargo capacity. The battery location also contributes to the vehicle’s lower centre of gravity, a boon to agility.
The engine, working in concert with the electric motor (MG2), assures responsive performance, while exemplary energy efficiency is achieved by using both electric motors (MG1 and MG2) for hybrid battery charging. Driving the Corolla Hybrid
The Corolla Hybrid’s linear acceleration response may take some by surprise. When pulling away, the battery provides a subtle power boost in order to put less strain on the engine and eliminate the “rubber band” effect experienced with some hybrids.
A preload differential adds to the confident acceleration feel. During low loads and low differential rotation, differential-limited torque is distributed to the left and right wheels, yielding excellent handling stability. At mid-range and high engine loads, the preload differential functions as an open differential.
Corolla Hybrid has EV mode, which allows the vehicle to be operated as a pure electric vehicle for short distances, depending upon certain conditions, such as battery charge level. This mode is useful for operating the vehicle in parking lots or indoor parking garages, for example. The Vehicle Proximity Notification feature alerts pedestrians of the vehicle’s presence when running in battery mode.
Along with the expected NORMAL and ECO drive modes, a SPORT drive mode setting allows for an increase in power for stronger acceleration response when desired.
NORMAL mode: Allows the hybrid system to achieve an ideal combination of fuel economy and vehicle acceleration. The accelerator opening amount changes linearly in response to accelerator pedal operation.
ECO mode: Improves hybrid system efficiency by limiting power in response to light to moderate accelerator pedal input.
SPORT mode: Available power is increased, allowing for improved acceleration response.
Stopping the Corolla Hybrid
Another boost to efficiency comes from the Electronically Controlled Brake (ECB) system, which coordinates operation between the regenerative braking force of the electric motors and the hydraulic braking system force to provide optimal stopping power. By proactively using the electric motors to recover as much electrical energy as possible from the regenerative braking system, this extremely efficient cooperative control helps to maximize fuel economy.
An active hydraulic booster on the conventional (non-regenerative) braking system improves pedal feel and feedback for the driver. Critically, should there ever be a malfunction in the ECB system, the conventional hydraulic braking system can stop the vehicle.
Brake Hold, when engaged, is a convenient technology that reduces driver effort while waiting at a traffic light or while driving in heavy traffic. When the driver presses the accelerator, Brake Hold releases instantly. How the Other Half Works
The other half of the Hybrid Synergy Drive team, the gas engine, is no less impressive than the electric side. The 2ZR-FXE 1.8-litre inline four-cylinder engine was designed specifically for a hybrid application. The long-stroke configuration employs the Atkinson cycle, which uses a very high compression ratio (13.0:1) along with a shorter intake stroke and longer expansion stroke than the Otto cycle. The Atkinson cycle extracts more energy from the fuel, and the electric motors compensate for reduced low-end power (versus the Otto cycle).
Friction created by the piston skirts, rotating parts and oil pump is reduced, and an electric water pump eliminates the parasitic losses with a conventional belt-driven pump. Toyota sought efficiency gains in every system. The highly-efficient air conditioning system, for example, uses S-FLOW control, which automatically optimizes airflow throughout the cabin according to the temperature setting, actual cabin and outside temperatures, sunlight intensity, and occupied seats.
Getting the engine up to operating temperature quickly is critical to conserving fuel and reducing emissions at start-up. In the Corolla Hybrid, an exhaust heat recirculation system speeds up engine coolant warm-up. That in turn allows the hybrid system to stop the gas engine earlier and more often in the driving cycle when it’s not needed, for example in low-power-demand city driving conditions.
The PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) heater quickly provides cabin heat electrically in cold temperatures. Hybrid Exclusives
The Corolla Hybrid rolls on 15-inch aluminum alloy wheels with low-rolling resistance tires. As on the Corolla gas models, the new multi-link rear suspension improves both handling agility and ride comfort compared to the previous-generation Corolla Sedan.
The instrument panel uses a high-grade meter with a 7-inch Multi-Information Display (MID). The MID shows the speedometer, as well as a hybrid system indicator/real-time battery charge status indicator. ECO accelerator guidance, also shown in the MID, can provide a guideline for maximizing fuel efficiency by coaching the driver on optimal accelerator pedal operation to match driving conditions. Drivers who like the visual appeal of seeing engine rpm can choose to display a tachometer. Multimedia Mogul
The 2020 Corolla Hybrid’s multimedia offerings start with the standard Entune™ 3.0 Audio system that includes: 8-in. touchscreen display; six speakers; Apple CarPlay compatibility; Entune 3.0 App Suite Connect; Safety Connect; Scout GPS Link Compatible; Siri Eyes Free; auxiliary audio jack and USB 2.0 port with iPod connectivity and control; AM/FM; MP3/WMA playback capability; voice recognition training and tutorials; hands-free phone capability; voice recognition; music streaming via Bluetooth; customizable home screen, and weather/traffic information via Entune 3.0 App Suite. Safety
The Corolla Hybrid features eight standard airbags and Toyota’s Star Safety System, which includes Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, Anti-lock Braking System, and Smart Stop Technology. All Corolla models come equipped with a standard backup camera. Toyota Safety Sense 2.0
Significantly, all 2020 Corolla models are equipped as standard with Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0, an advanced suite of integrated active safety features. PCS (Pre-Collision System): Is designed to automatically activate the brakes to help avoid a collision or mitigate the impact force. PCS is able to detect a vehicle or pedestrian in day and low-light conditions, as well as a bicycle during daylight. Full-Speed DRCC (Dynamic Radar Cruise Control): Designed for highway use, designed to maintain a set vehicle-to-vehicle distance and is also capable of low-speed following up to speeds of about 24 mph. The Corolla can stop when the vehicle ahead comes to a stop, maintaining an appropriate distance to it. LDA (Lane Departure Alert) w/ Steering Assist: Designed to give the driver audible and visual warnings and, if necessary, provides steering assistance if it detects the possibility of leaving the driving lane. It also detects excess weaving within the driving lane that might indicate driver distraction, inattention or drowsiness. LTA (Lane Tracing Assist): LTA is enabled when LDA and DRCC are both on and active. LTA employs a lane centering function that will make constant steering inputs to help the driver keep the vehicle in its lane. LTA is designed for uses on relatively straight highways to preemptively avoid unwanted lane departures and reduce driver fatigue. AHB (Automatic High Beam): When enabled, detects the headlights of oncoming vehicles and taillights of preceding vehicles and automatically switches between high and low beams as appropriate.
The 2020 Corolla Hybrid will go on sale in Canada in the Spring of 2019.
2019 Prius is Most Capable Yet Thanks to Available New AWD-e System
TORONTO, ON – November 28, 2018 –Winter is coming, and thanks to the 2019 Prius, with available new AWD-e system, there’s no need to fear it. Go further and explore more with confidence and control, no matter what the weather and road conditions are. Designed to provide more confidence and control when weather and road conditions are less than ideal, the electric all-wheel drive system further expands where the Prius can take drivers.
The new Prius AWD-e system will certainly deliver added traction and confidence for drivers but, in true Prius fashion, the 2019 AWD-e will lay claim to being one of the most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive-equipped passenger cars available in Canada thanks to manufacturer-projected fuel consumptions of 4.5 / 4.9 / 4.7 L/100 km (city/highway/combined). Toyota estimates that the AWD-e model could account for as much as 65 percent of annual Canadian Prius sales.
Toyota’s AWD-e system is ideal for Prius. The automatic on-demand system does not require a centre differential or other torque-apportioning device, nor does it need a front-to-rear driveshaft. Instead, the “e” in AWD-e stands for electric. The Prius AWD-e uses an independent electric, magnet-less rear motor (a Toyota first) to power the rear wheels from 0 to 10 km/h, then when needed, up to 70 km/h. This system provides the power to the rear wheels to pull away from a stop, yet the on-demand system recognizes when all-wheel-drive performance is not needed to provide great fuel economy.
The addition of the available AWD-e system is only part of the wider revision to the 2019 Prius, which debuts newly refined front and rear exterior styling, along with additional interior updates. Let’s not forget that the front-wheel-drive (FWD) Prius will still offer the impressive fuel economy for which it is known, with manufacturer-projected fuel consumptions of 4.4 / 4.6 / 4.4 L/100 km (city/highway/combined).
The 2019 Prius FWD will be available with Base and Technology grades, while the AWD-e model will be offered in Base, Technology and Technology with Advanced package grades. Prius will also sport two new colours for 2019, Supersonic Red and Electric Storm Blue.
The AWD-e models use a newly developed compact Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery that is designed to provide excellent performance in cold-weather conditions. The AWD-e battery fits under the rear seat area and does not impact the luggage capacity. The FWD models will tout a Lithium Ion battery.
The Prius AWD-e models offer the same 1,855 L of carrying space with the standard 60:40 split rear seatbacks lowered as other Prius models. That’s more than in some small SUVs and larger than most full-size sedans. Expanding carrying options, the Prius AWD-e will offer available Genuine Toyota Accessory cargo crossbars for roof rack attachments, such as for carrying bikes, kayaks, snowboards, or a cargo carrier. The Prius AWD-e Technology features upgraded SofTex-trimmed, heated front seats with 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.
The SofTex-trimmed heated tilt/telescopic steering wheel on Technology grades features surface temperature-regulating properties to help make it feel more comfortable in hot or cold weather. The steering wheel also integrates switches for the audio system, Multi-Information Display, and Bluetooth hands-free phone controls.
The Prius comes standard with heated front seats, driver’s door Smart Key System, Push Button Start and remote illuminated entry. The Technology grades include Standard Smart Key System on three doors (driver, passenger and hatch). An Adaptive Front Lighting System is standard on the Technology with Advanced package grade. Standard Toyota Safety Sense
All 2019 Prius models, including the Prius AWD-e versions, come standard with Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P). Using millimeter-wave radar and a monocular camera sensor to help detect a pedestrian, a vehicle, and lane markers and headlights in the surrounding area, TSS-P provides a comprehensive bundle of active safety features including: Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/ PD), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/ SA), Automatic High Beams (AHB), and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC).
Because all Prius models, under certain circumstances, can operate in battery mode alone, during which they make little to no noise, they incorporate a Vehicle Proximity Notification System (VPNS) to help alert pedestrians and cyclists. High Tech Galore
All Prius models share interior features including the familiar central screen interface. The 4.2″ colour Dual Multi-Information Display with customizable screens adds an AWD-e system indicator to the menu of displays, which also includes Energy Monitor, Hybrid System Indicator and Eco Score, Eco Savings Record, Drive Monitor, Eco Wallet, Eco Diary, Climate Control, driver support systems, audio system content, and navigation system content. For the ultimate in high-tech information, the available (in the Advanced package) Colour Head-Up Display (HUD) shows the speedometer, navigation, and Hybrid System Indicator in the driver’s line of sight.
The standard audio system for AWD-e models includes a 6.1 in. touch-screen display, AM/FM CD player, 6 speakers, auxiliary audio jack, one USB 2.0 port with iPod connectivity and two 2.1-amp USB charge ports, advanced voice recognition, Bluetooth hands-free phone capability, phone book access and music streaming, Siri Eyes Free, and an integrated backup camera display. The Technology with Advanced Package grade comes standard with a large 11.6” HD multimedia display. 2019 Prius Mechanical Features
The Prius AWD-e shares the Hybrid Synergy Drive system with other Prius models. The system combines the output of a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder gasoline engine and two motor/generators through an electronically controlled planetary-type continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Electronically Controlled Brake System coordinates control between the regenerative braking and the vehicle’s hydraulic brake force to provide optimal brake performance and feel.
The 2ZR-FXE 1.8-litre 4-cylinder gasoline engine is itself a paragon of high efficiency. Thanks to ultra-low internal friction and efficient combustion, it exceeds 40 percent thermal efficiency, which is among the highest in the world for a gasoline engine.
The Prius gets a good share of its fuel efficiency by cheating the wind with an ultra-low 0.24 coefficient of drag (Cd), which is among the lowest of current production passenger cars. An automatic grille shutter reduces drag by closing when airflow to the radiator is not needed. Even the air conditioning system, which uses a quiet electric compressor, works intelligently to maximize energy efficiency. The Smart-flow (S-FLOW) mode directs airflow only to seated occupants to conserve energy and maximize comfort.
Standard Bi-LED headlamps and LED rear combination lamps reduce energy consumption compared to halogens, while giving better light and having a longer service life. A backup camera comes standard on all grades, and a full-width glass panel beneath the rear spoiler aids rearward visibility while also serving as a distinctive design feature. Toyota New Global Architecture
The fourth-generation Prius is built around the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). The platform introduced a new high-strength body structure, multi-link rear suspension and a lower centre of gravity. The result for the Prius is a highly engaging driving experience combined with exemplary ride smoothness and a quiet cabin.
Hot-stamped and high tensile steels, which allow for intricate forms that are both lightweight and strong, are used extensively throughout the body. Aluminum components, including the hood and rear doorframes and brake calipers, help keep vehicle weight low. Innovative fastening methods, including laser screw welding and advanced adhesives, contribute to structural strength.
The 2019 Prius will go on sale in Canada in the Spring of 2019.
RAV4 Technology: Smartest SUV On the Block

All-wheel drive (AWD) may have become a ubiquitous term in the automotive industry, and especially among SUVs, but not all AWD systems are the same. Toyota took a smarter approach to a technology that many might not even think about. The result is effective traction for inclement and slippery weather and trails, while reducing AWD’s typical drag on fuel economy.
The 2019 RAV4 offers three different AWD systems. In LE and XLE models, the optional AWD can send up to 50 percent of available torque to the rear wheels when necessary.
Standard on AWD-equipped Limited gas and Trail grade models, Dynamic Torque Vectoring is added to the AWD system, which uses special couplings to manage torque distribution between the left and right rear wheels. As a result, should one rear wheel lose contact with the surface – during trail driving, for example – torque will flow to the grounded wheel to help keep the vehicle moving. In driving situations where AWD is not needed, Rear Driveline Disconnect uses a ratchet-type dog clutch to disengage the rear wheels and stop the rear drive shaft’s rotation. That reduces the energy needed to propel the vehicle, therefore helping to reduce fuel consumption. Why Wait for Slip?
The RAV4 AWD system does not simply react to wheel slippage. Rather, the sophisticated AWD Integrated Management (AIM) integrates control of the engine, transmission, Electric Power Steering (EPS), AWD system, and brakes, changing its logic according to the driving environment.
During on-road driving, the system manages steering assist, throttle control, shift control and drive force distribution to further enhance steering stability. In off-road driving situations, the system adds brake control to the mix.
Standard on AWD-equipped gas RAV4 models, Multi-Terrain Select gives drivers the ability to maximize traction when driving through mud, sand, rocks or dirt. The system is easy to use thanks to control buttons or a control dial (depending on the grade) positioned to the left of the transmission shift lever.
The driver can select Mud & Sand mode for beach driving, or Rock & Dirt mode for trails. Using the Multi-Information Display (MID), the driver can view torque allocation and slip control, which change depending on driving and road conditions. Toyota Safety Sense 2.0
Toyota has fulfilled a goal to make driver safety systems with automatic emergency braking standard on most models, and the 2019 RAV4 debuts with the second generation of the Toyota Safety Sense system (TSS 2.0). The full system is standard on all grades and includes: Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD)
Capability to detect a preceding vehicle or pedestrian in daytime or with better low-light recognition capabilities, or daytime cyclist (new). System will alert the driver with audible and visual warnings and/or apply brakes to help mitigate or avoid the collision in certain cases (using Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Brake Assist (BA), and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB). Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
For highways/freeways only, this adaptive cruise control functions at 0-110 mph and enables low-speed speed matching, stopping, and acceleration/deceleration relative to a preceding vehicle traveling at a slower speed. Speed, cut-in, and distance control are enhanced, as well as Turn Signal Linked control added, for a more natural response. Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA)
Newly added to LDA w/SA is the capability, under some circumstances, to detect the road’s edge, in addition to the pre-existing capability to detect visible lane markers and the vehicle’s position in the lane. If unintentional lane deviation is detected, the system alerts the driver with audible and visual warnings. Steering Assist can provide small corrective steering inputs to help the driver prevent the vehicle from unintentionally leaving its lane. Automatic High Beam (AHB)
Capability to automatically activate and deactivate high beams based on the driving environment and preceding vehicle’s lights. New Lane Tracing Assist (LTA)
For highways/freeways only, LTA can be enabled when using DRCC and has the capability to recognize white or yellow lane markings or the path of a preceding vehicle if lane markers are temporarily unavailable. It can also identify and actively track the centre of the lane by providing steering assistance (hands-on, driver-assist system). This reduces driver burden and supports safe driving, especially in traffic congestion on long highway trips. The LTA system can be turned on/off. Smarter Hybrid
Since introducing the first mass-production gas/electric hybrid vehicle, the Prius, 22 years ago, Toyota has continually refined and upgraded the technology. The new-generation Toyota Hybrid system in the RAV4 HV is more compact, more efficient and quieter than in the previous model.
Big changes in the geartrain yield significant efficiency improvements. The new transaxle mounts the electric motors (MG1 and MG2) coaxially rather than in-line, and the resulting smaller and lighter package reduces frictional losses.
The reduction gear is now a parallel shaft gear, rather than a planetary, and a new multi-function gear integrates the power-split planetary ring gear, parking gear, and counter-drive gear. The changes add up to an approximately 25-percent reduction in transmission losses compared to the previous model.
Further efficiency improvements come from a variable cooling system (electric water pump, electric thermostat) and a fully variable oil pump.
Energy transmission losses are reduced by new computer integration and a smaller, lighter power stack installed directly above the transaxle.
The new Ni-MH battery pack is smaller and more efficient than in the previous RAV4 HV, reducing HV battery charging time and frequency and contributing to enhanced fuel efficiency. The pack is small enough to be installed under the rear seats, rather than taking up space under the cargo area. Hybrids Have Fun, Too.
The RAV4 HV driver will notice a more linear acceleration feel, thanks to the way the system optimizes the level of electric motor assistance and engine rpm without the engine running at high revs. Engine speed is synchronized with vehicle speed. Differential pre-load yields better standing-start performance and straight-line stability.
Sport mode optimizes drive torque to prioritize acceleration performance, making RAV4 HV feel more responsive. A sequential shifting feature delivers responsive engine braking force in steps, like a manual transmission. The driver can “downshift” the vehicle for more engine braking using auto-manual shifting or the “S” position on the shift lever.
The 2019 RAV4 HV can even coach the driver toward achieving higher fuel economy. An accelerator guide function suggests an acceleration amount to the driver according to the driving conditions, and a scoring function adds a measure of fun to eco driving.
All-New 2020 Toyota Corolla Sedan Ready to Rock the Sedan World
TORONTO, ON – November 15, 2018 – With more than 45 million Toyota Corollas sold globally since its introduction in 1966, it would be difficult to find a driver who did not recognize the name. Everyone, it seems, has a Corolla story. Many, though are going to be doing double takes when they see the re-imagined and reconfigured 2020 Toyota Corolla Sedan. And that’s exactly the point.
The 12th-generation Toyota Corolla made its arrival in two chapters: the all-new Corolla Hatchback arrived earlier this year, and now comes the best-selling Corolla body style, the sedan. Both are based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), which is far more than a new body structure, also bringing together new approaches to engineering, design, assembly, and materials.
TNGA transforms both Corolla styles into drivers’ delights while also bolstering the model’s renowned value and reliability. Both draw from the same DNA and share powertrains. It’s no surprise, then, that the 2020 Corolla Sedan dramatically elevates this model’s focus on comfort and refinement while also infusing it with the Corolla Hatchback’s feisty personality.
The Corolla sedan’s bold new look is a perfect reflection of the bumper-to-bumper, wheels-to-roof transformation that has taken place. The TNGA platform means an available engine that produces more power than its predecessor yet delivers better fuel efficiency. TNGA imbues the Corolla sedan with greater agility, yet also with its smoothest, quietest ride. TNGA also means an elevated feeling of quality in every surface, switch and control the driver sees and touches. And, critically, TNGA delivers on Toyota’s commitment to driver and passenger safety with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite of active safety systems – standard on every Corolla sedan model. Design Transformation
Toyota shook up the midsize sedan ranks with the new-generation Camry, and now the compact sedan segment is in for a jolt with the 2020 Corolla sedan. From every angle, the new Corolla looks lower and leaner, tauter and tighter. Powerful fender flares and generously curved fender top surfaces accent its sculpted, athletic core.
The design team called its working concept “Shooting Robust,” because they were shooting for a robust, confidence-inspiring stance. Yet, they had to maintain ample space for practical, real-world use. That’s why people buy sedans, after all.
The 2020 Corolla sedan rides on a 2,700 mm wheelbase, like its predecessor, yet any commonality ends there. Corolla’s dynamic performance and stance benefit greatly from wider front (+11 mm.) and rear (+22 mm) track dimensions. The front overhang was shortened by 33 mm, and the rear overhang extended by more than 15 mm. Height was reduced 20 mm, and the hood lowered 35 mm. for better forward visibility, made possible by mounting the engine lower. Those changes, plus many others, reduce the centre of gravity by 20 mm. – a significant amount, as any racecar engineer can attest. That’s just one part of the transformation that has turned the Corolla sedan into a highly nimble, engaging machine to drive.
The bold front fascia details vary by model grade, with the SE and XSE putting on the sportiest face, including a body-color chin spoiler and aero stabilizing fins to emphasize the wide stance. The slim, J-shaped Bi-Beam LED headlamps wrap deeply into the front fenders and give the Corolla sedan a steely stare and a distinct nighttime signature. The sporty SE and XSE grades use triple J-shaped clearance lamps with LED light guides along with LED turn signals, creating a unique design signature.
The rear leaves a distinct lighting impression as well, with narrow combination lamps that wrap deeply into the fenders. All 2020 Corolla sedan models use LEDs, the type and style varying by model grade. The sporty grades feature smoked outer light lenses.
What better way to showcase the Corolla’s dramatic new sheetmetal than with a dramatic new color? The new hue is a highly iridescent Celestite Grey Metallic. The rest of the palette includes Blizzard Pearl, Super White, Classic Silver Metallic, Black Sand Pearl, Barcelona Red, Blue Crush Metallic and Dark Blue Metallic. Big Wheels Keep on Turning
The Corolla sedan transformation continues where the rubber meets the road. For the first time, 18-inch wheels are on the menu, available on the SE and XSE grades. These multi-spoke alloys get their great looks from a complex machining technique paired with deep surfacing and dark accents. The LE grade rides on 16-inch steel wheels with covers. The XLE grade gets new 16-inch alloy wheels with three-dimensional twisted spokes. Cabin Fever
Simple. Warm. Inviting. Sensuous. These descriptors, seemingly from the luxury car realm, inspired designers’ efforts when visualizing Corolla sedan’s cabin. The result is called “Sensuous Minimalism.” It’s equal parts sporty and elegant, and, as always, Corolla-comfortable and durable.
A neat instrument panel lends an open, harmonious feeling thanks to its slimmer upper surface, with character lines that interlock with the door trim to convey an airy atmosphere. At the centre of the instrument panel, within easy view for the driver and front passenger, sits a high-resolution 8-inch multimedia touchscreen for the standard Entune 3.0 multimedia system on all grades except the L grade, which gets a 7-inch multimedia touchscreen.
The centre stack screen provides access to vehicle settings, audio controls, navigation, and Entune 3.0 apps. Climate controls, located below the multimedia portal, are fashioned in a bright, highly visible digitized configuration. The centre stack flows into a wider console, with an armrest that’s nearly 20 mm longer than in the previous model, for greater comfort.
The cockpit provides an engaging interior space that surrounds the driver while offering a spacious environment for all passengers. Compared to the previous Corolla, the instrument panel, cowl, hood and beltline height are all lowered to increase visibility and create the interior’s open feel.
High-gloss materials are paired with matte elements – silver accents with piano black and available contrasting stitching – to accentuate a premium look and feel. Minimized gaps between buttons and switches, along with the elimination of unnecessary lettering on switchgear, adds to the high-class ambience. Consistency in all materials’ and elements’ shape, color, grain, and gloss maximize continuity and aesthetic quality.
Available ambient lighting illuminates the front door trim, console tray and front cupholder. The tray can hold small items such as a smartphone or wallet, or, when so equipped, houses the optional Qi wireless device charging pad. Terraced cup holders adapt to various-sized beverage containers. Digital Tools
The Corolla comes standard with a 4.2-inch thin film transistor (TFT) Multi-Information Display (MID), with an available 7-inch MID located between the high-grade tachometer and speedometer. With the larger display, the driver can switch between analog and digital speedometer styles.
Featuring rich graphics, the easy-to-read MID can be custom configured by the driver and offers intuitive operation to access information for the audio and multimedia systems, navigation system, vehicle information including fuel efficiency and tire pressure, the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), and other important parameters and system settings. Front Row Seating
From behind the wheel, the 2020 Corolla sedan feels quite different than its predecessor. Positioning the driver’s hip point 25 mm lower and 40 mm further rearward yields an optimized driving position. The result not only improves comfort, but also helps to lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity and improves front/rear weight distribution.
These changes, along with the reconfigured lower beltline, slimmer instrument panel, slimmer A-pillars, and repositioned side view mirrors, result in more expansive outward visibility.
The front seats of the XSE and SE grades debut a new design featuring a unique shape with a headrest that nestles into the shoulder area, while the XLE and LE grades offer a seatback with a new U-shaped pattern. This major departure from a conventional square seatback design creates a sense of youthful, sporty appeal while improving comfort. The SE and XSE grades’ front seats offer thin, yet broad shoulder supports, evocative of a competition bucket seat, which overlap solid and thick side bolsters to achieve enhanced holding performance.
Seating materials include standard cloth or, in higher grades, SofTex™. New interior color schemes include several striking two-tone accents. Choices include Blue/Black (black as the main color with blue highlights), Moonstone (light gray as the main color with dark gray highlights) and new Macadamia (a warm, inviting cream color). Lots of Room, Not Noise
The Corolla sedan may break tradition in the styling department, but it keeps to Toyota tradition when it comes to passenger room and comfort. The rear seat area retains excellent headroom, despite the lower roofline. Legroom is also plentiful, fulfilling a basic mission of sedans.
What you don’t get in the 2020 Corolla is noise. Powertrain and road noise have been culled thanks to revised drivetrain efficiencies, plus the widespread implementation of sound-absorbing materials, including Thinsulate®, sealants, foams, and silencers. The TNGA structure utilizes additional seals in its body panel gaps to insulate noise penetration and enhance air-sealing performance. As one example, the floor silencer pad is now one large piece, instead of many smaller elements. The inner and outer dash silencers are thicker. Combine all that with Corolla’s quieter powertrain, and it’s one tranquil ride. Cooler Where It Counts
Corolla sedan’s fully redesigned air conditioning system is more compact, more efficient and more effective. One example of the smarter climate control is the innovative twin-layer recirculation/fresh air induction unit: In cold climates, it will automatically send dehumidified fresh air to the upper cabin to reduce glass fogging while promoting recirculation of warm cabin air in lower areas.
System controls, located below the multimedia portal, are fashioned in a bright, highly-visible digitized configuration. The climate control interface features a piano black background with satin and silver accents for a premium, high-quality look and feel. Multi-choice Multimedia
The 2020 Corolla sedan comes ready to pair with the driver’s digital life. The standard Entune 3.0 Audio includes an available 8-in. touchscreen display; six speakers; Apple CarPlay compatibility; Entune 3.0 App Suite Connect; Safety Connect; Scout GPS Link Compatible; Siri Eyes Free; auxiliary audio jack and USB 2.0 port with iPod connectivity and control; AM/FM; MP3/WMA playback capability; hands-free phone capability; voice recognition and music streaming via Bluetooth; customizable home screen; and weather/traffic info via Entune 3.0 App Suite.
The LE and SE grades get Entune 3.0 Audio with an 8-inch touch screen and 2 USB ports.
Entune 3.0 Audio Plus, standard on XSE, XLE and optional on SE CVT, adds an HD Radio and Weather/Traffic info; SiriusXM with Cache Radio; Entune 3.0 Connected Services; Service Connect, and Remote Connect.
Also available on the SE CVT is Entune 3.0 Audio Plus with JBL.
Topping the range is Entune 3.0 Audio Premium that’s optional on XSE and XLE. The package includes a JBL nine-speaker, 800-watt system with Clari-Fi; Dynamic Voice Recognition; Dynamic Navigation; Dynamic Points of Interest Search; and Destination Assist Connect.

Featured apps for Entune systems include: Safety Connect®
In the event of an accident or other emergency, assistance can be dispatched directly to the vehicle’s GPS location. Other connected services available on the Corolla include airbag-linked Automatic Emergency Notification, Manual Emergency Notification (SOS button) and Stolen Vehicle Locator. Destination Assist Connect
Directions and destinations delivered by a real person with 24-hour, en-route navigation assistance. Navigation
Provides the most up-to-date map data, routes and POI on its embedded system. (Available with Entune 3.0 Premium Audio.) Dynamic Force is with You
The 2020 Corolla sedan L, LE, and XLE grades will use the 1.8-litre engine (2ZR-FAE) found in the previous generation, yet with more horsepower and better fuel efficiency. The XSE and SE grades are powered by a completely-new 2.0-litre Dynamic-Force direct-injection inline four-cylinder engine (M20A-FKS). This new engine delivers more performance and using less fuel. Remarkably, the new Corolla engine is physically smaller and lighter, helping to lower the car’s centre of gravity and improve its overall balance.
Here are some of the tech bits on Corolla sedan’s new available engine:
The new Dynamic Force engine gets it high power and efficiency from a combination of high compression ratio (13:1), Toyota D4-S fuel injection combining direct and secondary port injectors, high-speed combustion, VVT-iE intelligent variable valve-timing on the intake side and VVT-i on the exhaust. VVT-iE uses an electric motor instead of oil pressure to control the variable valve timing.
A two-discharge port oil pump and a variable cooling system with electric water pump help maximize engine performance and efficiency. The more efficient cooling system also ensures quicker cabin heating on cold days and quicker cool-down when the air conditioner is used.
All of those technologies, along with ultra-low internal friction, yield a maximum thermal efficiency of 40 percent, among the highest in the world for a passenger vehicle engine. You can’t feel thermal efficiency, but you can feel the effects of 169 peak horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 151 lb-ft peak torque at 4,800 rpm. Shifting Smarter
Sedan buyer trends are shifting, and the 2020 Corolla sedan is right there with them. The new Direct-Shift CVT (continuously variable transmission) combines the smooth, fuel-efficient performance of a CVT with a more direct driving feel of a traditional geared automatic. The key to its distinct performance feel is a physical first gear used for start-off acceleration, before handing off to the CVT’s pulley system. Because the launch gear is handling the higher input load at launch, the size of the CVT’s belt and pulley components could be reduced, yielding shifting speeds that are 20 percent faster than in a conventional CVT.
High-speed, high-response gear-shifting technology, using a multiplate wet clutch, switches power from the gearset to the CVT’s belt and pulleys. The Direct Shift CVT has simulated 10-speed Sequential Shiftmatic steps along with Sport Mode. Synchronization of the increasing engine revs and vehicle speed gives a linear acceleration feel.
For those who want to shift for themselves, the 2020 Corolla sedan offers an intriguing choice with the all-new 6-speed iMT (intelligent manual transmission). Like some premium sports cars, it features downshift rev-matching control, automatically detecting when the driver is shifting and quickly rev-matching to make any driver a stick-shift pro.
New control logic improves acceleration feel when starting off, and improved shift feel makes this a stick shift you want to use. Increased use of micro polishing on gear teeth reduces cabin noise. Standard Hill-start Assist Control (also on the CVT models), helps prevent the dreaded roll-back when starting off on an incline. Platform: The Strong, Silent Type
A super-rigid structure, lower centre of gravity and highly refined suspension tuning endow the Corolla sedan with exemplary handling agility and ride comfort, along with a distinctive driving personality. This high-strength platform is fortified through the increased use of ultra-high-tensile steel as well as the application of new structural adhesive technology for enhanced body rigidity and occupant safety. Specifically, torsional rigidity is improved by 60 percent compared to its predecessor.
The new body uses a totally new multi-load path front structure to absorb frontal collision impact forces and disperses collision energy to help prevent deformation of the occupant compartment. High-tensile steel in the rocker panel reinforcements and the upper kick panel; wider underbody side members; strengthened rear bumper reinforcements, and thicker dashboard panel, floor panels, and underbody tunnel all improve energy dispersion in the event of a collision.
A squared figure-of-eight reinforced ring-shaped structure around the door openings, along with larger-diameter impact beams for the front and rear doors, are designed to help in the event of a side collision. Sport Sedan Handling, Sedan Comfort
The 2020 Corolla sedan looks the part of a fun-to-drive sport sedan, and the chassis delivers on the promise. The multi-link independent rear suspension is a major advance over the torsion beam setup used in the previous model, more adept at comfortably absorbing bumps while also ratcheting up agility.
The MacPherson strut front suspension, totally revised for this platform, uses sophisticated techniques, including a strut bearing mounted coaxially with the kingpin axis. This feature allows smoother upward suspension travel, especially while traversing bumps, resulting in more comfortable steering feel.
Overall, front and rear suspension friction has been reduced by 40 percent. Newly developed shock absorbers have been tuned to provide optimal damping force for dynamic handling and stability with exemplary ride comfort. Foundation for Safety
The 2020 Corolla sedan features eight standard airbags and Toyota’s Star Safety System, which includes Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, Anti-lock Braking System, and Smart Stop Technology. All Corolla models come equipped with a standard backup camera. Toyota Safety Sense 2.0
Significantly, all 2020 Toyota Corolla models are equipped as standard with Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0, an advanced suite of integrated active and pre-collision safety features.
PCS (Pre-Collision System): Uses both a millimeter wave radar sensor and a forward-facing camera sensor for highly accurate detection of objects such as a vehicle, a pedestrian or a cyclist in front of the vehicle. If the PCS determines there is a high probability of a collision, or if it deems a collision is unavoidable, the system is designed to automatically activate the brakes to help avoid the collision entirely or mitigate the impact force.
DRCC (Dynamic Radar Cruise Control): Designed for highway use, has a vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode that utilizes a millimeter wave radar sensor and camera sensor to maintain a pre-set follow distance from the preceding vehicle. The Full-speed DRCC version, standard on CVT models, is also capable of low-speed following, including stop-and-go traffic. The Corolla is designed to stop when the vehicle ahead comes to a stop, maintaining an appropriate distance to it. The driver enjoys more relaxed driving in situations that can be annoying and fatiguing, while also gaining a measure of safety.
LDA (Lane Departure Alert) with Steer Assist: Provides the driver with audible and visual warnings (vehicle positioning warning image shown in the Multi-Information Display) and, if necessary, is designed to provide steering assistance if it determines the possibility of deviation from the driving lane. It is also designed to detects vehicle sway (excess weaving within the driving lane) that might indicate driver distraction, inattention or drowsiness.
LTA (Lane Tracing Assist): LTA, standard on CVT models, is enabled when LDA and DRCC are both on and active. LTA employs a lane centering function that is designed to make constant steering inputs to help the driver keep the vehicle in the centre of its lane. LTA is designed for uses on relatively straight highways to preemptively avoid unwanted lane departures and reduce driver fatigue.
AHB (Automatic High Beam): When enabled, the AHB system uses an in-vehicle camera to help detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles and taillights of preceding vehicles, then automatically switches between high and low beams as appropriate.
Blind Spot Monitor is a standard or optional feature, depending on model grade. When an approaching vehicle is detected, the system is designed to alert the driver using indicators on the outside mirrors.
Brake Hold, when engaged, is a convenient technology that helps reduce driver workload while waiting at a traffic light or while driving in traffic. When the driver depresses the accelerator pedal, Brake Hold releases.

New “Limited” trim level introduces leather seating, ambient lighting and rain-sensing wipers to C-HR, plus all features from the XLE Premium grade.
The C-HR defies convention, and is unlike anything Toyota has ever created. Curbside, it’s distinctive from every angle, with sculpted, athletic styling. Modern touches include slim projector-style headlamps that wrap deep into the body’s character lines, LED daytime running lights, colour-keyed mirrors, a cantilevered rear spoiler and sculpted taillights.
The excitement continues inside the C-HR, where there’s no need to sacrifice comfort for style. The interior features room for five, or up to 1,031 liters (36.4 cubic feet) of cargo behind the front sport seats. The 60/40 split fold-down rear seat, slim seatbacks, generous foot wells and headliner design maximize C-HR’s ability to accommodate people and gear, while still offering plenty of comfort for rear-seat passengers. Style-wise, the interior functions as well as it looks and feels – with precise placement of instruments and controls to create a driver-centric environment. The leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob provides a premium appearance and confident grip, while the instrument panel features a piano black trim accent, soft-touch materials, and diamond-pattern accents. The C-HR delivers pure pleasure performance, with deep bolstered front seats designed to keep occupants connected to the road and securely in place when burning through tight corners. Under the hood, C-HR’s 2.0L four-cylinder engine sends up to 144 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission with intelligent shift. Sequential shift mode provides manual-like shifting between seven virtual gears, while Sport Driving Mode amps up the throttle response to fully unleash C-HR’s spirited personality.

They join the C-HR’s new 8-inch Display Audio system with six speakers and steering wheel-mounted controls plus Bluetooth connectivity, the Aha Audio System Internet Radio and Gracenote Database to create a complete, modern information and entertainment system. Comfort is assured with dual-zone air conditioning, while a 4.2” multi-information display with steering wheel-mounted controls provides important information to the driver at a glance.

Life is waiting: Get to it in the All-New 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback
All-new bold and dynamic design based on a new TNGA platform
New 2.0L TNGA engine offering more power and better fuel efficiency
Standard Entune 3.0 Audio and Apple CarPlay
First application of standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.0
Lower starting price than the 2018 Corolla iM at only $20,980
TORONTO, ON – August 9, 2018 – What are you waiting for? It’s time to embrace a life of style and fun, in the Toyota Corolla Hatchback. This Corolla – all-new for the 2019 model year – takes advantage of Toyota’s latest performance, handling, connected, and safety technologies, plus styling that grabs everyone’s attention. And, this hatch starts at just $20,980, that’s $1,770 less than the 2018 Corolla iM.
“Corolla is an icon, and Canadians love hatchbacks, so what could be better than combining the two?” said Cyril Dimitris, Vice President, Toyota Canada Inc. “Drive it and discover the thrill of fun-to-drive performance that lives up to this hatchback’s striking design, plus advanced yet user-friendly technologies that keep you connected with the things that matter, no matter where life takes you.”
The newest addition to the Corolla family starts with an all-new way of thinking about automotive design. This is the first compact hatch to be conceived and built using the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) – a platform that enables many desirable features.
TNGA allowed designers to give Corolla Hatchback a low, wide stance to create a poised, athletic vehicle with a performance-enhancing low centre of gravity. The body is evocatively styled and exceptionally sporty, with a rear spoiler and standard features such as LED headlamps and rear combination lamps to impart a premium appearance.
Get inside and even before the drive begins, the Corolla Hatchback engages the senses. For the cabin, designers adopted a modern concept of sensuous minimalism to create an interior that is simple, yet warm and inviting, with a premium look and feel. TNGA optimizes the seating positions even as it helps lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity.
Under the hood, engineers created an all-new two-litre, four-cylinder Dynamic Force engine that gives Corolla Hatchback a competitive 168 peak horsepower plus excellent fuel efficiency.

This spirited engine is paired with a choice of two all-new transmissions. On the automatic side, a Direct Shift CVT has 10 sequential shiftmatic speed steps, a sport mode, and available paddle shifters. It’s also the first passenger vehicle CVT in the world with a launch gear. This improves transmission efficiency and responsiveness in lower gear ratios. For drivers who prefer a manual gearbox, there’s an all-new six speed intelligent manual transmission with downshift rev-matching control to ensure smoother gear shifting.
TNGA also improves the Corolla Hatchback’s dynamic performance. The body is a remarkable 60 percent more rigid than Toyota’s previous compact hatch offering. This maximizes handling and helps reduce noise and vibration. Meantime, suspensions have been carefully tuned to optimize ride comfort and stability, while the many design choices that have lowered the centre of gravity ensure the vehicle stays firmly planted on the road.
Of course, the Corolla Hatchback wouldn’t be a Toyota without delivering impressive safety performance: Toyota is committed to making the road safer for all users and to lead the industry with innovative safety technology that’s available to all. To that end, the Corolla Hatchback is the first Toyota to be equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0. This updated safety package adds new active-safety technologies and capabilities that enhance protection such as a Pre-Collision System that can detect a pedestrian under low light conditions or a bicyclist during daytime, a Lane Departure Alert able to detect the road’s edge and a new Lane Trace Assist (LTA) system that reduces driver burden and supports safe driving, especially in traffic congestion or long highway trips, when Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is engaged. This is a significant update to the bundle of active safety technologies Toyota introduced to Canadians in 2016, and which is now included as standard equipment on 95 percent of all new Toyota vehicles sold in the country. Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 joins the Star Safety System, a standard backup camera, seven air bags, electronic parking brake, and other technologies to help drivers avoid accidents or minimize their consequences.
To express its upscale, sophisticated character, every 2019 Corolla Hatchback comes standard equipped with an impressive package of amenities. Easy-to-use technologies include Apple CarPlay and the Entune 3.0 Audio multimedia system, featuring the Entune App Suite and navigation provided by Scout GPS Link. These join an 8” Display Audio system with USB audio input and voice recognition, automatic air conditioning, push button start, and more.
To cater to a wide variety of preferences and budgets, the Corolla Hatchback is offered in a range of models as follows:
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback S is offered with a choice of the manual (starting MSRP: $20,980) or CVT (starting MSRP: $21,980) transmission. This model features power windows with up/down function on all windows, a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat, sport fabric seat material and 15” steel wheels.
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE (starting MSRP: $22,580 manual, $23, 580 CVT) adds 16” alloy wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, an anti-theft system, unique badging, and more. CVT-equipped models also receive steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE Upgrade (starting MSRP: $23,980 manual, $24,980 CVT) builds on the SE trim level with a heated steering wheel, 18” alloy wheels, the Blind Spot Monitor safety system, and the Qi wireless charging system for personal electronics.
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback XSE (starting MSRP: $27,980 CVT only) starts with the SE Upgrade model, adding integrated Sirius XM Satellite Radio and the enhanced Entune 3.0 Premium Audio system with Safety Connect and embedded navigation. Other upgrades include dual auto air conditioning, sport fabric seating material with leatherette trim, an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, 7” multi-information display, and LED fog lamps.
The all-new Corolla Hatchback can be enhanced by accessorizing to your personality and lifestyle. Accentuate the sporty nature of this hot hatch with an available Rear Spoiler accessory and record your adventures behind the wheel with the Toyota Genuine Dash Camera. Accessories like Roof Rack, START+ Remote Engine Starter and Block Heater will add to practicality and convenience, while available Body Side Mouldings, Hood Deflector and Cargo Liner will help protect the exterior and interior of your new Corolla Hatchback.
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback goes on sale on August 15 at Toyota Dealers across Canada. For complete and up to date details and specifications, visit: https://www.toyota.ca/corollahatchback.
Toyota Canada takes a more attention-grabbing approach to Takata airbag inflator recalls
Aug 7, 2018
TORONTO, Ontario, August 7, 2018 – Toyota Canada Inc. (TCI) is taking a more assertive approach to persuading thousands of Toyota owners across the country to have their Takata airbag inflators replaced.
Worldwide recalls related to defective Takata airbag inflators have affected nearly every automaker. Using first class mail and, wherever possible, follow-up phone calls, TCI started reaching out to the owners Toyota vehicles in Canada impacted by the Takata recalls as early as 2013. To date, however, more than half of all owners have yet to respond to the company’s requests to have the inflators replaced. Along with long term exposure to fluctuating high temperatures and environmental moisture, the risk of a defective Takata airbag inflator rupture increases with the amount of time a vehicle is in service. Since the involved vehicles may now be 10-15 years old, Toyota is taking more emphatic steps to get the attention of the vehicle owners and persuade them to bring their vehicles in for the free remedy.
The multi-channel campaign will include phone calls, e-mail and three increasingly insistent postcards to be sent to the known owners of the Toyota vehicles in Canada impacted by the Takata recalls. The company hopes the bright colours, blunt language and powerful images in the postcards will present a rationale that is too compelling to ignore.
“Canadians have not responded as quickly as we had hoped, so we’re looking to grab their attention,” says Stephen Beatty, Vice President, Corporate at TCI. “The greater the effectiveness of our campaign, the lower the risk of injury, so we’re working hard to have an impact.”
The age of the vehicles has also made it difficult for TCI to connect with current owners. Toyota vehicles typically hold their value longer than most other brands, so there is a very strong secondary market for them. For this reason, an involved vehicle may have had several ownership changes over the past 10 or 15 years. Since new owners of pre-owned vehicles don’t always register the change of ownership, it has proven difficult to connect with them. Toyota hopes this new campaign will reach them.
“We’re taking every step possible to identify the current owners of the vehicles,” Beatty added. “Once we know who they are, we can urge them to bring their vehicle in, so we’re using new methods to try to identify and engage them.”
Toyota is also reminding Canadians that they should always do two things when buying a pre-owned vehicle:
No matter who they purchase a pre-owned vehicle from, buyers should be sure to ask about its recall status.
New owners should register their name and contact information with the automaker’s Canadian customer relations department. This way, they’ll be connected to the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and will receive important advisories about the vehicle.
For more information about Toyota vehicles impacted by the Takata airbag inflator recalls, customers can go to https://www.toyota.ca/toyota/en/my-toyota/recalls. Owners of impacted vehicles with additional questions are encouraged to call 1-888-570-1675.

All-New Toyota Avalon Wins Highest Safety Award From IIHS
Jul 30, 2018
TORONTO, ONTARIO, July 30, 2018 — The completely refreshed 2019 Toyota Avalon has been recognized with the highest safety award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The ‘Limited’ grade of the vehicle, (equipped with LED projector headlights), won the 2018 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award after undergoing a series of safety tests to evaluate the strength of the vehicle’s crashworthiness and crash avoidance and mitigation ability.
Built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, the all-new Toyota Avalon offers a stronger chassis, allowing it to perform even better during crash testing. The new TNGA sedan platform also offers enhanced handling and a comfortable driving experience without compromising the vehicles’ sleek design.
Standard on the new Avalon is the Toyota Safety Sense™ P package – a suite of advanced safety features designed to assist the driver and help mitigate collisions. These active safety technologies include: Pre-Collision System with pedestrian detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, and Automatic High Beams.
The standard Pre-Collision System helped prevent frontal collisions in IIHS track tests at about 19 and 40 km/h. Its forward collision warning component also met National Highway Traffic Safety Administration criteria.
The LED projector headlights with laser ablation helped the Limited grade 2019 Avalon earn the top rating as they provide good visibility in most driving conditions.
To earn the 2018 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, vehicles were required to earn good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, and an “acceptable” or “good” rating in the passenger side small overlap test. It also required available front crash prevention to earn an “advanced” or “superior” rating and available “good” rated headlights.
Toyota to bring latest technologies, Toyota Production System to support mobility at the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020
Jul 23, 2018
July 23, 2018 – TOKYO, Japan – With two years to go until the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, Toyota today outlined the mobility concept that will become the basis for its Tokyo 2020 Games activities, organized around three main pillars : (1) Mobility for all; (2) Sustainability, centering on the realization of a hydrogen society, with the environment and safety as core principles; and (3) Transportation support of staff, media and athletes between Games venues using a Toyota Production System (TPS)-based system.
Toyota believes that giving unprecedented access to people including those with impairments brings the notion of mobility back to its most fundamental meaning: the freedom to move.
In collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee, the company would like to help make Tokyo, the first host city to welcome both the Olympic and the Paralympic Games for the second time, a global showcase for “Mobility for All,” contributing to making those Games the most innovative in history.
“The freedom of being mobile is at the heart of being able to participate in society,” said Toyota President Akio Toyoda. “If someone wants to take on a challenge and moving is what is preventing them from doing so, Toyota would like to help tackle that problem. We want mobility to be a possibility, not an obstacle. By being involved with the Olympics, the Paralympics and the Special Olympics Games, I hope that Toyota will come to respect everyone’s uniqueness and embrace diversity. Once that is realized, we will finally be able to take a step closer to our goal of “mobility for all” and ensure, like athletes show us every day, that being mobile equals having a chance to make one’s dreams come true.”
Toyota became the first worldwide mobility partner of the IOC and the IPC in 2015 with the aim to contribute to “creating a peaceful society without discrimination through sports” and “a commitment to creating a sustainable society through mobility”. Additionally, from last year, Toyota launched its first global corporate initiative, “Start Your Impossible,” to bring people together and contribute to a society where all people can challenge what is possible. The product categories covered by the Toyota sponsorship are: vehicles, mobility services and certain transportation and mobility support products (including robots). At Tokyo 2020, Toyota’s support will be deployed in three main areas: 1) “Mobility for All”
Taking on the challenge to provide the freedom to move to everyone including those with impairments through the Tokyo 2020 games, Toyota will:
Showcase the future of automated driving as the ultimate “mobility for all”, demonstrating how automated vehicles could one day offer the freedom to move everyone. Verification testing and demonstrations using SAE Level 4* automation, where all driving functions are performed by the vehicle in certain well-defined areas of operation, will take place in the Tokyo Water Front City and Haneda areas in Tokyo;
Introduce a new type of moving experience through a demonstration of “TOYOTA Concept-i,” a car that recognizes drivers’ emotions and preferences and can make conversation using artificial intelligence (AI);
Support transportation services for athletes and affiliated guests around the Athlete’s Village with e-Palette, the next generation battery electric vehicle specially designed for Mobility as a Service (MaaS);
Provide its existing assistive vehicles lineup, WelCab, as well as new personal mobility devices and support for last-mile mobility needs. Toyota also hopes its new JPN Taxi, introduced in October 2017, will be popular around Tokyo to welcome visitors from around the world, including people using wheelchairs.
Provide personal mobility solutions such as the Toyota i-ROAD as well as a standing-riding device to support working staff at the Games, such as security officers.
2) Sustainability, with the environment and safety as core principles, centered on the realization of a hydrogen society
Toyota plans to contribute to sustainable Games by providing a fleet of over 3,000 passenger vehicles for official use and others, equipped with the latest environmental and safety technologies to minimize environmental burden and traffic accidents.
In order to make Tokyo 2020 a turning point in realizing a hydrogen society, Toyota will support the Games and their legacy with a large number of zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) such as the Mirai sedan for official use. In addition, the Fuel Cell Bus “Sora,” as well as Fuel Cell forklifts made and sold by Toyota Industries Corporation, will help support the Games.
In addition to FCEV, the latest Hybrid Electric/Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV/PHEV) from the Toyota and Lexus line-ups, as well as new Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), will mainly compose the rest of the fleet. In total, the company and the Games’ organisers aim to achieve the lowest emissions target level of any official vehicle fleet used at the Olympic and Paralympic Games with the use of these official vehicles.
Vehicles for official use will be equipped with the latest active safety technology packages such as Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) and Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+), as well as Parking Support Brake (PKSB), a technology to help prevent collisions that primarily occur in parking lots and garages.
In addition to official vehicles above, some vehicles will feature Highway Teammate, an automated driving safety function that allows hands-off driving on highways (SAE Level 2* automation).
3) Games official transportation support using the Toyota Production System
It is estimated that 15 million visitors will join Tokyo’s 15 million citizens during the Games period. While the Tokyo Metropolitan Area will surely live up to its reputation as one of the most efficient cities for urban mobility, Toyota will support the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee to help ensure a safe and effective transportation between venues for those using the official fleet. To do this, the company will provide the knowledge it has garnered over years of experience applying the Toyota Production System.
Toyota will also support the movement of official staff and athletes to and from events with the latest information and connected technologies, such as vehicle Data Communication Modules connected to its Mobility Service Platform, to provide safe, secure, and smooth transportation of people and freight during the games.
Toyota will also support on-the-ground vehicle dispatching and transportation operations from an efficiency standpoint.
Cities around the world currently face challenges surrounding mobility, having to solve issues ranging from traffic congestion to air pollution, traffic accidents, and access for people with impairments. Starting from Tokyo 2020 and through Beijing 2022 and Paris 2024, Toyota is hoping to help tackle these challenges in collaboration with stakeholders around the world, and contribute to creating legacy to realize a sustainable mobility society.
Toyota will disclose more of its plans and contributions, including those related to new mobility products and solutions, moving forward between now and Tokyo 2020.
About Toyota’s Top Olympic Partnership and Worldwide Paralympic Partnership

THE REVIVAL OF THE FITTEST: TOYOTA SUPRA GETS BACK TO AMERICAN RACING IN NASCAR XFINITY SERIES
Jul 6, 2018
TORONTO, ONTARIO, July 6, 2018 – Toyota Supra is back at the track! Beginning in 2019, the globally-recognized iconic sports car will prove its championship mettle in the hotly contested NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS). Supra will make its on-track debut in the NXS race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019.
“When you talk Toyota and cool cars, Supra is the first thing that comes to mind for many auto enthusiasts,” said Ed Laukes, group vice president of Toyota Division Marketing. “Supra’s return in production form is huge news, but now we’re also going to see this iconic sports car return to American motorsport. From a marketing perspective, it’s important to have a race car that evokes the dynamism and character of its showroom counterpart. We’re confident we’ve accomplished that with Supra, and we hope racing fans the world over will proudly cheer its success on track.”
Toyota worked with its subsidiaries, TRD (Toyota Racing Development) in Costa Mesa, California, and Calty Design Research, Inc. (Calty) in Newport Beach, California, to develop a Supra for the NASCAR competition. The two teams applied key learnings from their prior collaborative efforts in NASCAR, which included the 2018 Toyota Camry that clinched the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship.
To build the Supra for NASCAR, TRD and Calty scaled Supra to fit within NASCAR’s specifications for race vehicle entries in the NXS.
“We’ve had tremendous success working with Calty to develop race cars that match the look, feel and excitement of their showroom counterparts,” said David Wilson, president of TRD. “We’re confident Calty and TRD have developed another race car, Supra, that is capable of winning races and championships. For Supra to be racing in NASCAR just speaks to how important this vehicle is to us, and that we believe Supra can be a bona fide championship winner.”
Toyota has fielded Camry in NXS competitions since 2007, tallying four manufacturer championships while Camry has earned two driver championships and 142 wins. The 2019 season marks the first year Toyota will field a different model in all three of NASCAR’s national series – Camry at the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) level, Supra in the NXS, and Tundra in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS).
Supra previously raced in both America and Japan, where it was a dominant force in Super GT competition and a contender in the IMSA Camel GT Series in the 1980s. It also made two appearances in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France in the 1990s.
TRD and Calty previously worked together to design:
2013: Sixth-generation Camry for MENCS
2014: Tundra for NCWTS
2015: Seventh-generation Camry for NXS
2016: Eighth-generation Camry for MENCS
2017: Eighth-generation Camry for NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series
Calty has worked hand-in-hand with TRD, Toyota’s North American race engineer arm, to ensure consistency between production models and on-track Toyota race cars, while also improving on-track performance with each new build. The groups began work on the NASCAR Supra in 2017.
“When Ed (Laukes) told me they were bringing Supra back, I almost didn’t believe him. I figured he was messing with me, but Toyota did it and this is a big deal for the NASCAR Xfinity Series,” said Kyle Busch, who won the 2009 NXS championship in Camry. “Supra is an iconic cool car, and to have it racing in NASCAR to highlight Supra’s return speaks to how important this is. I’m hoping to be the first guy to get Supra to victory lane, but I’m sure there’s a few other Toyota drivers thinking the same thing.”
Reflecting Toyota’s commitment to motorsports, the manufacturer now showcases six models across eight series in America. Toyota Racing Development’s lineup includes: Camry, Supra, and Tundra in the NASCAR national series; Camry in the NHRA Funny Car competition; Camry in the ARCA Racing Series and regional touring series; 86 and Corolla Hatchback in Formula Drift; as well as engines for dirt midget racing and other series. Could Canadian Seniors Lead the Semi-Automated Vehicle Revolution?
Jun 28, 2018
Ottawa, ON – June 28, 2018 A new study by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) suggests senior drivers in Canada could play a leadership role in the safe adoption of semi-automated vehicles as Canadian roadways transition from traditional vehicles to increasingly automated vehicles. The study, funded by the Toyota Canada Foundation, analyzed data regarding the knowledge, attitudes and practices of senior drivers collected from focus groups, as well as an online survey of 2,662 Canadians.
The TIRF study was conducted to better understand the perceptions and attitudes of older drivers towards semi-automated vehicles, and to understand how their knowledge and beliefs about such vehicles can influence the likelihood they will rely on this technology to improve their safety on the road and increase their mobility.
“Our findings were quite surprising and showed that older drivers are very receptive to using semi-automated vehicles,” said Robyn Robertson, President and CEO of TIRF. “This is counter-intuitive as the adoption of new technologies is typically associated with a young demographic.”
Results of the study showed that older drivers recognize the potential of semi-automated technology to increase their safety on the road and instill greater confidence in their ability to drive under challenging conditions that are typically avoided.
They also recognize that this technology can enhance mobility among older drivers, helping them to safely prolong their driving years and mitigate errors associated with age-related factors such as perceptual, cognitive and physical declines that can degrade their ability to perform common driving maneuvers.
The study concluded that this cohort of drivers is very receptive to strategies and tools that help them learn to use semi-automated vehicles in ways that maximize safety and mobility benefits.
Canadians aged 65 years and older currently represent one in seven Canadians. In the next two decades, the population of seniors will grow to more than 10 million and will account for one in four Canadians. As one of the largest age cohorts, older adults will represent a significant segment of the driving population.
Senior drivers are also among the safest drivers because of their accumulated years of driving experience and exposure to all types of road environments and conditions.
“It appears that senior drivers are poised to take on a leadership role in the transformation of our country’s vehicle fleet given their safe driving behaviour and their openness to learning about new technologies that might help them,” Robertson added. “Senior drivers seem to possess important characteristics that make them ideal candidates for safe early adoption.”
Perhaps most importantly, what we learn from our seniors’ transition to increasingly automated vehicles will let us develop important educational tools to help the other population segments in their transition.
Robertson concluded: “Seniors’ ability to adapt to a new vehicle and road environment, as some of the safest drivers on the road, could help to set standards regarding the level of education and skills that drivers of all ages must possess before using semi-automated vehicles.” An interesting dichotomy. An important challenge. Are we doing enough to enable them?
If Canada’s largest population segment and safest drivers are a) most aware of the potential benefits of increasingly automated vehicles, b) most cognizant of the inherent risks and limitations, and c) most open to learning how to use the technology safely… what’s stopping us from putting them in the driver’s seat?
The in-depth understanding of seniors’ attitudes and behaviours vis-à-vis semi-automated vehicles gained in the study will help develop education and training tailored to the needs and expectations of senior drivers.
In developing this education and training, there are two important barriers that need to be considered.
Seniors will face a steeper learning curve than the younger segments of the population: They have been driving for a longer period of time, mainly in vehicles that lack advanced driver assistance systems.
They also learn differently: The study showed that Canadian seniors overwhelmingly prefer hands-on learning and formal classroom settings with opportunities to practice before getting behind the wheel.
These two hurdles point to the need for educational strategies tailored to this demographic, as well as appropriate learning environments and resources.
“TIRF’s research shows us our older drivers could actually be best poised to lead society’s transition into increasingly automated vehicles,” says Toyota Canada Foundation board member, Larry Hutchinson. “But they’d also have a steeper learning curve and would require a different learning environment. This interesting dichotomy poses an important challenge for all of us. We’ll need to upgrade the education of drivers if we want this transition to be a smooth one.”

TORONTO, ON – June 20, 2018 – Canadian drivers in the market for a fun to drive, boldly styled and remarkably efficient gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle will want to check out the all-new 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid – making its first appearance in the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s annual EcoRun event. The Camry Hybrid will be joined by Toyota’s Prius Prime plug-in hybrid-electric at the 2018 EcoRun, taking place June 20-23 between Moncton and Fredericton in New Brunswick.
“At Toyota, we recognize that environmental excellence must go hand in hand with vehicles that work for today’s drivers under real world conditions,” said Cyril Dimitris, Vice President, Toyota Canada Inc. “The Camry Hybrid and the Prius Prime are great examples of how Toyota makes it easy for drivers in Canada – and around the world – to manage their environmental footprint while still enjoying all of the benefits of a fun-to-drive, stylish, comfortable and well-equipped vehicle. We look forward to demonstrating both models at this year’s EcoRun.”
When it was introduced more than a decade ago, the Camry Hybrid quickly established itself as Toyota’s best-selling hybrid-electric model – and with good reason, as it benefits from all of the qualities that have made the conventional gasoline Camry so successful. For the 2018 model year, engineers fitted the Camry Hybrid with the next generation of the Toyota Hybrid System. The THS II boosts net system power, even as it improves efficiency by 17 percent compared to the previous year’s model. What’s more, the 2018 Camry Hybrid positively sips fuel, with an appetite of less than five liters per 100 kilometers (city/highway combined). Built using Toyota New Global Architecture – a state of the art approach to platform and powertrain design that helps deliver superior handling, the 2018 Camry Hybrid is more fun than ever to drive, too.
Now available in across Canada, the Prius Prime features room for four adults and is built around an ultra-efficient power train. This plug-in hybrid-electric model is Toyota’s most fuel-efficient hybrid to date. With Prius Prime, drivers can travel more than 40 kilometers in pure electric mode – more than enough for most daily commutes – without using a drop of gasoline. What’s more, drivers can relax knowing that if they run out of electric charge, the Prius Prime’s ultra-efficient gasoline-electric hybrid will seamlessly take over. With a range of more than 1,000 kilometers on a single tank of gas and full battery charge, Prius Prime gets drivers to their destinations, every time.
Beyond their advanced power trains, both the Camry Hybrid and the Prius Prime offer drivers stylish vehicles that are fun to drive and loaded with comfort, convenience and safety features.
Together, the Camry Hybrid and Prius Prime demonstrate two of Toyota’s many approaches to decarbonize the automobile as part of the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050. This is a global initiative to address climate change, natural resource consumption, and recycling issues. It includes the New Vehicle Zero Emissions Challenge, which employs advanced power train technologies and other strategies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from new vehicles by 90 percent compared to 2010 levels.
Toyota is the number one seller of electrified vehicles in Canada. Since the launch of the Toyota Prius in 2000, Toyota Canada has sold more than 160,000 hybrid electric vehicles in Canada.
